Description of responsibilities:
This position is responsible for performing skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility on an assigned shift. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Operations Supervisor or other Wastewater Department management staff. Employees are required to work on rotating swing shifts that workdays from 7:00 A.M. – 7:00 P.M., and nights from 7:00 P.M. – 7:00 A.M., weekends and holidays.
Work involves the use of:
- stationery and portable pumps, valves, gates, gauges, meters, control panels, and motor vehicles
- Computers, tablets, and software systems for data entry and monitoring
- Ladders (12–25 ft.) and equipment used in elevated work areas
- Chemicals such as chlorine, polymers, and ferric chloride are used in daily operations.
- Work also includes operation of unit processes such as gravity thickeners, digesters, clarifiers, activated sludge, cogeneration, oxygen distillation, gas purification, and sludge dewatering.
- Laboratory analysis is performed on the processes to assure its proper operation.
- Employees are exposed to noise, vibration, fumes, odors, toxic conditions, dust, poor ventilation, and inclement weather.
- Safety equipment such as gas detectors, breathing apparatus, harnesses, barricades, tripod, cones, hand-held flags, etc., will be used.
Required experience:
- Experience or training related to wastewater treatment operations, utilities, industrial processes, or a related field
- Experience working in industrial or plant environments, including exposure to hazardous conditions
- Experience performing custodial, maintenance, and preventive maintenance duties in a plant setting
- Experience performing physical work, including lifting up to 200 pounds (with the aid of two (2) other workers) and assisting with rescue retrieval systems
- Or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Required skills:
- Ability to perform manual work requiring dexterity.
- General knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and equipment
- Ability to understand and apply operating techniques and process controls
- Ability to monitor systems, interpret data, and make process adjustments
- Ability to respond promptly and effectively to emergencies and hazardous situations
- Ability to collect, analyze, and report operational and laboratory data
- Ability to operate computers and software systems for data entry and reporting
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and equipment documentation
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic procedures in standard, practical applications.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to maintain accurate records related to plant operations
- Ability to pass a respiratory fit test and use an approved respirator, such as a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
Required Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Wastewater coursework or related education preferred
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License, Class C
