It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. Description of Work

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor at a multi-custody male correctional facility, this position provides facility maintenance support predominantly in the trade area of plumbing. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Performing journey level duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of air, gas, water, and waste disposal systems.

2. Performing routine work assignments based on the nature of the location of the needed repair with assignments involving work of special or unusual nature are accompanied by specific instructions.

3. Exercising considerable independence in performance of routine work while unprecedented assignments are usually discussed with or supervised by foreman.

4. Reviewing work through inspection of work in progress and on the basis of satisfactory operation of equipment repaired or installed.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the Minimum Education and Experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/Management Preferences are not required but applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Documented knowledge of the methods of installation and repair of plumbing systems.

Salary Range

$39,244 - $68,679

About Central Prison

Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe-keepers. 


While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or worship services.
