Job Description
Organizes the daily activities of the clinics for the provision of patient care
Assessment of patients’ physical, social and psychological needs for patients seen in the Breast High Risk, Breast surgery/diagnostic and plastics/reconstruction clinics.
Confirms the reason for the office visit (chief complaint), and prepares the patient/caregiver for examination
Provides routine nursing support as directed by physicians and approved as standard practices
Provides dressing, drain and wound care as ordered and assists physician with breast biopsy/needle aspiration
Performs tissue expander inflation for Breast Reconstruction/plastics patients as per surgeon’s orders
Receives calls that require nursing assessment, talks directly to patients on the telephone and provides pertinent instructions or information within scope of practice.
Navigates newly diagnosed breast cancer patients through the surgical portion of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment; pre and post-operative teaching.
Empower patients and their families by providing information and education to facilitate decision making in order to enhance the patient’s choice of the best alternatives of care
Aids patient along the entire screening and diagnostic journey which includes helping educate and prepare patient fore genetic counselling and testing & imaging
Clinical liaison between patient and surgeons/High Risk/GPO MDs and other health care team members to provide continuity of care through the health care system
Follow –up on tests, referrals, imaging and biopsies that are ordered and booked as needed
Attends Breast Rounds with multidisciplinary team to discuss patient imaging and plan surgery options
Liaison with CCAC and other community agencies to ensure patients in community are receiving appropriate care and follow up
Liaison with other health disciplines and supports such as social worker, genetics counsellor and patient peer support.
Participates in patient education workshops and review of patient instructions pamphlets as required

Qualifications
Baccalaureate in Nursing
Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
Current BLS certification required
Must have a minimum of 2 years recent experience providing care for patients at high risk for breast cancer and with patients diagnosed and in treatment (medically and surgical) for breast cancer in an ambulatory setting or in patient setting.
Proven competency to perform breast exams an asset
A solid knowledge base regarding breast health and promotion, breast diagnostic testing and treatment and breast surgical/reconstructive surgery treatment/options,
Experience providing telephone nursing practice
Excellent computer skills, specifically with Electronic Medical Records and the Microsoft Office Suite
Must have excellent organizational, assessment, communication, counseling, and teaching skills
Works effectively as a strong team player and able to work independently
Ability to demonstrate empathy while remaining professional and respectful
Demonstrated commitment to continuing education, professional growth and maintenance of clinical competency is required
Professional behavior and communication that meets the standards of the professional regulatory college or association, as applicable, and the standards of Women’s College Hospital
