Job Description:

Primary Purpose of Role:

The Packaging Engineer / Packaging Systems Specialist is responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of packaging solutions, material handling processes, and packaging standards that support manufacturing, supplier, and logistics operations. This role collaborates across Supply Chain, Operations, Purchasing, Engineering, and external suppliers to support packaging optimization, operational efficiency, supplier compliance, and material flow initiatives.

The position also supports packaging-related systems, documentation, and asset visibility initiatives tied to returnable container management, logistics coordination, and operational process improvements. This role contributes to packaging quality, transportation efficiency, cost reduction, and continuous improvement efforts while supporting day-to-day operational needs across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design Solutions: Develop and revise part packaging specifications utilizing both returnable and expendable container systems.
  • Maintain Standards: Manage packaging documentation, master revision databases, and technical data for internal divisions and government entities.
  • Optimize Logistics: Drive packaging optimization to maximize transportation efficiency, container utilization, ergonomics, and material protection.
  • Control Assets: Oversee returnable packaging inventory, tracking initiatives, replenishment programs, and purchase requisitions.
  • Collaborate Globally: Partner with suppliers and cross-functional teams to guide supplier packaging development and ensure operational compliance.
  • Resolve Issues: Troubleshoot technical, quality, and system issues impacting production, warehousing, logistics, and supplier performance.
  • Validate Designs: Coordinate and conduct rigorous packaging material testing and validation procedures to ensure component protection.
  • Reduce Costs: Actively identify, execute, and track cost-saving initiatives and continuous improvement projects across the supply chain.
  • Manage Systems: Support operational reporting tools, packaging management systems, and asset visibility initiatives.
  • Evaluate Feedback: Investigate and resolve packaging concerns raised by internal stakeholders, external suppliers, and customers.

Key Performance Measures:

  • Cost savings: Total annual dollar savings achieved through packaging optimization, material substitution, and freight reduction.
  • Database integrity: Percentage of accuracy and up-to-date compliance of the packaging specification database and asset tracking records.
  • Operational responsiveness: Average time to resolve packaging-related production issues and complete supplier compliance audits.
  • On-time launch: Percentage of part packaging specifications finalized and approved prior to scheduled production launch dates.
  • Asset loss reduction: Annual percentage reduction in missing or unreturned returnable containers and racking assets.
  • Damage rate: Percentage reduction in material scrap and transit damage caused by packaging failures.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Knowledge of packaging concepts and material handling processes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of ISTA standards and packaging methodologies.

Preferred:

  • Experience in Power Apps.
  • Experience in AutoCAD.
  • Proficiency with SAP/ SAP Ariba.
  • Experience in operational tracking systems (RFID), reporting tools, or process visibility initiatives.
  • Supplier development or packaging quality experience.
  • Cost analysis or continuous improvement skills.

Experience:

Required:

  • Experience designing, testing, or maintaining packaging solutions.
  • Experience with packaging materials specifications and part preservation.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing, supply chain, or warehouse operations.

Scope Factors:

  • Supports packaging and operational initiatives across manufacturing, supplier, and logistics environments.
  • Contributes to packaging efficiency, operational execution, material flow, and continuous improvement initiatives.
