
Scientist, Chemical Design & Synthesis (CDS)
Job Description
Summary of Responsibilities:
The Scientist will support Lubrizol’s Chemical Design & Synthesis group by conducting hands-on laboratory experimentation, primarily focused on the synthesis, characterization, and development of new molecules—especially hyperdispersant chemistries for Paints & Coatings applications. This role will follow the guidance of the laboratory lead, contributing to innovative research and ensuring safe, efficient lab operations.
Essential Job Functions:
- Conduct laboratory synthesis, characterization, and performance testing of organic and polymeric materials, under the direction of the laboratory lead and Technology Manager.
- Execute hands-on experiments, collect and analyze data, and maintain accurate laboratory records.
- Utilize technical knowledge and statistical tools to solve technical challenges as assigned.
- Compile, interpret, and communicate results to the laboratory lead, Technology Manager, colleagues, sponsors, and customers.
- Prepare technical reports and enter experimental results electronically upon completion of laboratory work.
- Maintain and ensure operational safety of laboratory equipment.
- Adhere to Lubrizol’s safety procedures and good housekeeping practices.
- Participate in continuous improvement and safety initiatives within the laboratory.
Skills, Qualifications, Experience, Special Physical Requirements:
- B.S. or M.S. degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience in laboratory synthesis of organic and/or polymeric compounds (industrial or academic).
- Familiarity with analytical instrumentation and methodology (ex. NMR, FTIR, GPC, etc.)
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills in English; fluency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese will be advantageous.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office products.
