Job Description
We’re looking for a P&C Lead Field Technician to join our Protection & Control team and take charge of field testing, commissioning, and maintenance for substations and power systems across the Southeast. This senior role combines hands-on technical execution with field leadership, ensuring safe, high-quality performance on high-voltage systems. You’ll work on relaying, pilot channels, SCADA integration, and more, helping power plants, utilities, and critical infrastructure operate reliably.
- Perform field testing and maintenance on substation equipment, including relays (electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor), pilot channel systems, SCADA inputs, alarms, function switches, and protection schemes
- Commission new substations and perform upgrades, troubleshooting, and validation of relaying and communications systems
- Plan, coordinate, and execute testing activities on schedule and according to safety and quality standards
- Support junior field personnel and collaborate with engineers and project managers
- Interpret schematics and wiring diagrams; apply company and client-specific test procedures
- Ensure all site activities meet operational and safety standards
- Document test results and field service reports accurately and on time
- Communicate clearly with internal teams, clients, and control centers throughout project execution
- Follow strict safety and PPE usage protocols due to noise, electrical hazards, and elevated work areas
- 10+ years of experience in commissioning, protection & control testing, and relay calibration
- 5+ years leading field execution, coordinating testing plans, and mentoring technicians
- Extensive experience with P&C system integration, panel checkout, pilot channels (fiber, power line carrier, etc.), and SCADA systems
- Hands-on experience with data/SER/Fault recording and substation automation equipment
- Strong knowledge of three-phase power systems and related protection schemes
- Proficiency with substation test equipment, tools, and testing software
- Skilled in interpreting wiring diagrams, single-line drawings, and elementary schematics
- Proficient in Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Willingness to travel up to 70%, including overnight stays
- High school diploma or GED required
- An Associate's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology
- Valid driver’s license
- Must successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug tests
- Available to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays when needed
- Able to lift 50+ lbs., climb ladders, and perform physically demanding work in various weather conditions
- Prior experience commissioning protection systems in transmission and distribution substations
- Hands-on familiarity with integration/automation devices and digital fault recording
- Experience in both utility and industrial power environments
- P&C Engineering or Substation Design background
