What is the Opportunity?
Aecon’s Civil East sector is a cornerstone of our construction and infrastructure operations, delivering innovative solutions to some of the most complex and impactful projects globally. Renowned for its expertise in heavy civil construction, our Civil East sector specializes in building essential infrastructure that powers economies and enhances communities.
Our portfolio features cutting-edge work on bridges, highways, tunnels, and airports to name a few! In the Caribbean region, we are leveraging our expertise and collaborative approach to deliver world-class infrastructure projects tailored to meet the unique needs of the island communities.
The Civil Estimator will be responsible for the generation of accurate and timely cost estimates for assigned projects. The Estimator will deliver properly organized estimates, budgets and schedules, while managing Aecon’s risk.
What You'll Do Here:
- Accurately interpret and comprehend tender drawings and specifications.
- Present all aspects of the project scope, staging, timing, constraints, risks, and potential cost saving opportunities and alternatives to bid teams and management.
- Contribute to the management and leadership of projects through the proposal stage, including involvement in team meetings.
- Review design options and recommend best solution based on cost, engineering, quality, or availability of materials.
- Perform and/or direct quantity take-offs from tender drawings.
- Contribute to the risk assessment and management process -Identify risk areas. Contribute to the population of the Risk Register.
- Consistently and insightfully formulate all tender costs—labour, material, equipment, and procure subcontractor scope and costs—for quotation submission.
- Lead the estimate close-out process, including tender reviews and sub-proposal reviews and analysis.
- Lead the successful transition and handover of estimating documents to the project execution teams.
What You'll Bring To The Team:
- 5-10 years’ minimum experience in civil, concrete estimating within the construction/ industrial industry.
- University or technical college diploma in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, Gold Seal Certification (Estimating) or equivalent
- Excellent working knowledge of various types of construction contracts (e.g. Lump Sum, Cost Reimbursable, Unit Price, Design Build, etc.).
- Working knowledge of industry standards, specifications, standards, contract language/Terms and Conditions/Bonding etc.
- High degree of excellence at performing investigations of each tender and accurately review and incorporate all site conditions that impact bid costs, ensure constructability. Leads and mentor others in this process.
- Consistent and effective at successfully negotiating with vendors for project purchasing needs, conforming to Aecon’s procurement requirements including budgets and terms and conditions.
- Expert level understanding of balanced/un-balanced bids and forecasting margins at the tender stage.
- Coherently presents the essence/strategy of a completed estimate to management, defend its constructability, and defend calculated cost targets at a detailed level.
- Expertise in submitting written requests for clarifications from clients; consistently well worded, to Aecon’s advantage and never compromises Aecon’s position where we hold a bid advantage.
- An expert in the job handover process (from estimating to operations)
- Utilization of estimating software is an asset (Hard Dollar Estimating software, etc.) Computer Skills/ Technical knowledge; Strong computer skills with a knowledge of MS Excel / Word / PowerPoint etc., some knowledge of Autodesk Software including Navisworks, Revu Bluebeam (or Adobe), and the scheduling software Oracle P6 would be an asset.
- Good communications skills both oral and written.
