Overview of the Role
Reporting to the Global Head of Metals Operations, this experienced role will be part of the Global Metals operations team. The trading desk is active across a variety of products spanning from Concentrates, to Minerals, to Refined metals, to Warrants and Precious metals. The Metals Ops teams are responsible for all Physical Deliveries across the Globe. The successful candidate will ensure that scheduling and day-to-day operations in the Asia-Pacific region are running smoothly and that any problems are flagged at an early stage to mitigate any potential risks.
Main Responsibilities
- Acts as a reliable point of contact for routine internal and external inquiries on the desk.
- Maintain close communications with customers and upon necessity informing traders and customers of problems and issues arising from fulfilment of contracts.
- Maintain close communications with the senior traders, operations management and other relevant internal teams to ensure smooth cooperation;
- Needs to be proactive offering creative solutions to trading team, constantly optimizing and reducing transport and storage costs.
- Assist traders strategies by utilizing knowledge of product movement and relationships with external parties. Pro-actively resolving and communicating any transport issues that arise.
- Develop understanding of the physical forward contracts that the desk has and take responsibility for physical allocation with a focus on refined metals but also concentrates, minerals and precious metals as required for team cover purposes.
- Take ownership of issues, coordinate between customers, surveyors, labs, warehouses and freight forwarders until the issues are solved.
- Serves as a point of contact for internal or external inquiries. Participate in regular team meetings helping to ensure that any operational issues are addressed and resolved.
- Provide team coverage as workload's demand. Care about cross training and challenge the rest of the team on this front.
- Proven ability and willingness to operate across a variety of products, geographic locations and time zones.
- Report required information from Operations processes, to Ops Management as part of core activities, on a frequent basis as per requirements.
- Suggest ways and areas where AI solutions can be implemented to make daily traffic more efficient and accurate.
- Be the catalyst of change when it comes in aligning with the rest global metals operations. Have global vision and shape the rest of team members to think and act alike.
- Knowledge of cargo shipment procedures, customs exportation/importation procedures, environmental reporting when necessary, policies & industry standards, shipment regulations and maritime technical terminology, as well as relevant transport laws and the impact on cargo movement operations.
- Awareness of vessel cargo operations both containers and bulk freight.
- Collaborate with the freight desk and enhance our dry freight pre/post fixture processes. Advise on Charterparties from a practical/realistic point of view.
- Experienced in trade recaps review, confirmations, contract review and execution.
- Understanding of LC basic terms is necessary in order to build a constructive working relationship with trade finance and settlements teams.
- Proven analytical mindset with regard to product movement reconciliation, warehouse audits, along with the capacity to facilitate loss control investigations.
- Use of AI tools in order to enhance, facilitate and add efficiency in the daily ops processes.
- Designs and documents written procedures, where necessary or requested by Management.
- Maintain an accurate and up to date account of storage positions, product movement positions, review all accruals in the system, insuring proper costs have been booked against each trade / strategy or storage facility.
- Reconciliation of month end inventory explaining/correcting any differences accordingly. Communicate and work closely with traders onforward inventory projections.
Profile
The individual should have the following experience:
- Over 5 years of break/bulk commodities, especially on metals and dry freight side.
- Knowledge of more than one metals. Proven experience required in Aluminum, Copper, Nickel, Zinc, Tin.
- Knowledge of more than one mineral. Proven experience required in Iron ore, Sulphur, Coal
- Deep traffic/operational experience, exposure and experience to freight operations, ability to understand and advise stow planning preferences, challenge the vessel/port master, agent and port authorities to speed up Gunvor’s cargo operations
- Knowledge of charterparty clauses which affect physical delivery such as vessel particulars, draft Survey, lay days, NOR and turn time, demurrage/dispatch, freight. Understanding and coordination of cargo surveyor, P&I surveyors during cargo operators.
- Established market network across the main warehousing chains.
- Experience in warehouse incentives and able to negotiate and optimize $$$.
- Understanding of cargo transport options, documentation requirements for harmless and hazardous commodities covering dry bulk freight, containers, airfreight and multimodal inland transportation.
- Solid foundation and knowledge of loading and discharge procedures, ability to assess LOIs and whether they are really required to issue. Able to constructively protest to vessel owners and container carriers in order to always speed upload/disport operations and minimize demurrage bills.
- Knowledge of Warranting procedures
- Maintain a positive work environment within the team.
- Fluent English written and oral skills. Knowledge of Mandarin would be useful but not mandatory.
- Willingness to learn to operate more than one metals products.
- Knowledge of Blackstar and PowerBI systems is deemed very helpful.
