Job Description
Job Summary:
The Capital Project Analyst, Sr. is an individual contributor responsible for overseeing capital project tracking, monthly accruals, coordinating project’s financial closeout, asset classification, and capital project progress reporting in a capital-intensive operating environment. This position manages annual capital spend that exceeds $150 million ensuring that spend is accurately tracked, and timely accounted for, properly classified between capital and expense, and recorded in compliance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and company policy.
The position serves as the key liaison between Construction/Engineering and Accounting teams, ensuring completeness and accuracy of project-level financial data, and supporting timely capitalization into the fixed asset system. The role reports to the Manager of Capital Governance and Reporting.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Project Closeout Analysis and Management
Lead end-to-end capital project closeout analyses and processing inclusive of reviewing project status, tracking and recording total costs (committed, received not invoiced spend, prepaid, etc.), organize and prepare project closeout documentation, review and ensure proper cost assignments, and other readiness indicators.
Determine when projects require additional action prior to closeout such as incomplete costs, inappropriate cost classification, incorrect task assignment, or other processing issues.
Route project closeout packages for engineering approval and partner with accounting for asset capitalization
Governance, Controls, and Audit Support
Maintain capital governance control discipline through timely updates to closeout schedules, audit-related control records, and other required governance documentation necessary to support related SOX controls and audit requests.
Monitor post-close issues, PO balance issues, and other exceptions impacting capital accuracy and reporting
Internal Reporting and Stakeholder Support
Prepare internal management reporting inclusive of project aging, project status and spend analysis versus budget, disposal-related reporting, closeout reporting, and prepare monthly capital review materials.
Support stakeholders with information needs including pulling project, PO, and other reporting outputs and organizing and analyzing data to best support operational needs.
Exception Handling
Perform detailed review and specialized analysis of project cost details to ensure accurate tracking and accounting such as identification of embedded software, leases or maintenance agreements as well as capital versus expense classification.
Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree: Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field
More than 4 years of related work experience with project finance, project accounting, or capital governance.
Able to work independently with excellent project management skills.
Demonstrated attention to detail, able to identify issues, perform necessary research and resolve issues in a timely manner and in an environment with significant sized data sets.
Solid understanding of general accounting principles including capital versus expense cost treatment
Effective written and verbal communication skills for coordination with project administrators, fixed assets, auditors, and internal stakeholders.
Advanced Excel (Pivots, Data Models, Power Query, Solver, etc.)
Experience working in ERP systems (Oracle Fusion strongly preferred)
Experience working in Project Management Tools (SiteTracker strongly preferred)
Ability to manage and maintain structured financial templates and reporting tools across systems.
