Job Description:
Pay rate of $19.941 per hour. Employees may be promoted to a Construction Technician II position at a rate of $22.938 per hour upon acquiring the necessary certifications and demonstration of skills.
Exciting Added Pay Differentials! In this classification, those who hold a CDL and are utilized to perform CDL functions on a regular basis shall receive a pay differential of:
$1/hour after 1 year of continuous service,
an additional $1/hour after 3 years of continuous service,
an additional $1/hour after 5 years of continuous service.

Job Duties:
Survey Hwy Construction Technicians are primarily responsible for preliminary surveying of heavy highway construction projects.
A person in this role will be operating GPS equipment, total stations, and levels for the measurement of elevations and collecting of topographic data.
This position will also assist with Right of Way (ROW) surveys and use various tools to clear for line of sight.
Individuals will read and interpret construction plans, maintain records digitally, and utilize various software programs during daily activities.
The person in this position will be trained to perform various materials testing routines on concrete, asphalt, soils, and other materials as required.
This position also requires individuals to verify the location and quality of work matches the project plan set and contract.
Individuals will be expected to be able to work both as part of a team as well as individually with minimal supervision.
Individuals in this position will be required to work varying hours in all outdoor weather and temperatures on highway survey and/or construction projects.
This position assists with snow removal on highways and the interstate and individuals will be required to operate snowplows during winter weather events; training to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be provided.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Highway Construction Technician I: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
Highway Construction Technician II: Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections. OR Coursework or training in construction surveying, materials testing, or inspections practices, and in using associated instruments and equipment. Also, applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience or training in surveying, road construction, materials testing, recordkeeping, trigonometry, and geometry. Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment; valid Class A or B CDL with tanker endorsement. Computer experience, including word processing, spreadsheets, SiteManager, GEOPAK, and MicroStation software.
Other: Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Required training and costs associated with obtaining a CDL will be paid for by the department. This position may require overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is required. To qualify for the Hwy Construction Technician II classification, applicants must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Costs to obtain the permit will be paid by the department. To be hired at the Hwy Construction Technician II level, applicants must have passed the NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or a related field, which may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT courses. Upon hire, you will be provided with the required training material. This is self-paced training and once completed provides for promotion to the Hwy Construction Tech II level. Typically, this is accomplished within the first six months of employment. Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions and be placed in an “on call” status.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must have strong organizational skills, mathematical skills, and computer skills. Must be able to understand and follow instruction, as well as communicate effectively with supervisor(s), all coworkers, and the public. Must have the ability to work outdoors in environmental conditions, including dust, heat, cold, sun, wind, and exposure to vehicular traffic, as well as traverse uneven surfaces and clear obstacles to navigate the work environment. Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds, climb, bend, stoop, walk long distances, and work long hours, possibly weekends, in outdoor temperature extremes. Must be able to obtain material testing certification, such as American Concrete Institute (ACI). Ability to work with minimal supervision, be self-motivated, and hold high integrity. Trainable. Ability and willingness to learn and accept challenges by learning and adjusting to new technology and processes, as well as trainability. Quality/results-oriented sense of urgency in the performance of duties. Ability to work safely and demonstrate safe and reliable practices and behaviors. Ability to interact in a positive manner and treat co-workers and supervisors with dignity and respect, work to resolve conflicts, and make good decisions using sound judgment, processes, and purpose. Must be able to report to work within 40 minutes of notification under normal conditions.
