Solution Integration & Testing Architect
Job Description
At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.
The Position
About Us: A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Within Core Lab Development (CLD), a division of Roche Diagnostics Solutions (RDS), we focus on developing cutting-edge test solutions spanning clinical and immunochemistry, coagulation, mass spectrometry, and advanced laboratory automation. As part of our Solution Automation Integration and Testing group, you will operate within the cobas ultra omni Solution Layer. Here, a "Solution" represents a massive, complex System of Systems (SoS) where physical medical devices, robotic transport automation, and digital edge-to-cloud workflow software interact seamlessly, combining hardware and software products.
Important Context for Applicants: This is a Product R&D engineering role focused on physical product orchestration and embedded/cloud systems, not an enterprise IT infrastructure position.
Your Role
As a Solution Integration & Testing Architect, you will lead the technical orchestration of our R&D validation campaigns, interfacing across multiple Product Development System Teams and strategic external partners.
You will work in close, hand-in-hand partnership with the Solution Integration Manager. You own the architectural definition of the Solution Integration & Testing Strategy and design the physical, hybrid, and virtual lab topologies needed for complex testing. Your primary challenge is ensuring that hardware products (with long, physical development lifecycles) and software products (with rapid, continuous release lifecycles) are designed and architected to work seamlessly together to enable End-to-End (E2E) clinical workflows. Partnering closely with Solution Definition and Systems Test Architects, as well as your managerial counterpart, you ensure that both functional and non-functional requirements (performance, reliability, scale) are verifiably testable at the E2E solution level.
Key Responsibilities:
Overarching Integration Strategy: Architect the master Solution Integration Strategy. Define the integration levels, quality gates between those levels, and the Continuous Integration (CI) roadmap. Establish governance for global implementation environments and automated verification pipelines across the divergent development teams of system products.
Lab & Emulator Topology Strategy: Define the virtual, hybrid, and physical lab setup strategy. Lead the conceptual design and architecture of the digital twin landscapes, and hardware/software emulator topologies required to accurately mirror different systems that compose the solution.
Design for Testability: Act as the final technical gatekeeper by reviewing system use cases, Interface Control Documents (ICDs), and high-level requirements to guarantee verifiable testability at the solution level. Identify and prioritize critical architectural risks for E2E solution workflows.
Cross-Functional Product Boundaries: Establish and enforce clear cross-functional test and technical responsibilities across the product delivery nodes (e.g., hardware instruments, embedded control units, navify workflow software edge & cloud).
Technical Guidance & Automation Vision: Provide dedicated technical leadership, automation strategy, and coaching to embedded integration engineers, test automation developers, and analysts across the Solution Train. Facilitate bidirectional feedback with delivery streams to ensure consistent usage of quality gates.
Technical Validation Campaign Leadership: Provide technical leadership and oversight for E2E integration campaigns to verify that the complete system of systems meets intended performance, reliability, and customer needs, covering both functional and non-functional requirements.
Who You Are:
Education: University degree (Bachelor’s or Master's preferred) in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related multi-disciplinary engineering discipline.
Experience: 10+ years of deep technical experience in commercial product development (R&D), multi-domain systems engineering, and complex system integration—including at least 3 years explicitly focused on System-of-Systems (SoS) environments combining hardware and software products.
Technical Depth: Hands-on background in systems-level product development. Experience with test automation frameworks, CI pipelines, network topologies, and virtualization/simulation modeling applied to physical systems testing (e.g., Hardware-in-the-Loop, Software-in-the-Loop, instrument emulators).
Soft Skills: Highly proficient in dealing with ambiguity and uncertain project conditions; possesses the absolute willingness to speak up, challenge delivery choices, and voice concerns constructively when quality or deliverables are at risk.
