Job Description:

Summary:

 The Program Leader will serve as a student facilitator for the section of Encounters I for the AU-Ritsumeikan Sakura Scholars Program.

Program Leaders for Encounters I have various responsibilities, including updating their students about campus events and activities, hosting office hours, encouraging student engagement, and coordinating on course planning, facilitation, and classroom management/logistics.  Encounters I sections will meet every other week, and Program Leaders are expected to attend all bi-weekly Encounters I classes for their assigned sections and assist the Instructor by offering their unique perspective as an AU student. Program Leaders may also assist with in-person events and lectures related to the course.

Essential Functions:

  • Participate in Program Leader training and meetings throughout the semester (dates TBA).

  • Fulfill additional Move-In/All-American Welcome Week responsibilities as needed (for fall hires).

  • Attend Encounters I classes as assigned.

  • Coordinate and communicate with your assigned Instructor.

  • Contribute to facilitating classroom dialogues.

  • Hold office hours.

  • Meet and/or communicate regularly with your assigned Senior Program Leader.

  • Provide mentorship to students who are becoming academically/personally oriented to AU.

  • Assist with in-person events and lectures related to the course as needed.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Part-time.

  • 5 hours per week.

Salary Range:

  • $18.40 - $18.50 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Undergraduate student with sophomore standing or in their second year at AU with a minimum of 30 credits completed.

  • Completion of both AUx1 (CORE-100/101/196) and AUx2 or AU Encounters (CORE-200/201), unless it was not a requirement for you.

  • At least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average.

  • Good judicial standing.

  • Demonstrated leadership in the American University community.

  • Resident Assistants and Complex Problems Program Leaders are eligible to apply.

  

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Encounter AU is a course that explores what it means to be part of a university, not just a collection of buildings and rules, but a living community of people, ideas, and transformation. The Peer Leader for the Sakura Scholars section of Encounters I should have an interest in orienting students to the education systems of both the United States and Japan.

  • Current students in the AU-Ritsumeikan Sakura Scholars program are preferred.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Final hiring is contingent on the Encounters Program’s ability to assign you to the Sakura Scholars section based on the availability you provide.
