POSITION SUMMARY 

 

The Dental Hygienist conducts recall and hygiene appointments; and conducts intra-oral work during orthodontic clinics. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Put patient and parent/guardian at ease. Update medical history. Ensure antibiotics taken if required or arrange for antibiotics if not taken as required.  

  • Assess soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Scale as required. Take x-rays if required. 

  • Perform prophylaxis. Perform fluoride treatments.  

  • Discuss treatment needs. Discuss oral hygiene requirements and treatment appointments if needed. 

  • Motivate patient and parent/guardian to follow through on treatment plan. 

  • Complete all documentation of the visit. Complete fee report for billing of services. 

  • Open clinic and prepare for the day’s activities. 

  • Orthodontic Clinic: Take orthodontic records which includes: extra and intra oral photographs, and arrange for x-rays in radiology; band and/or bond braces to the teeth or debond braces; and ligate archwires or cement in intra-oral appliances, intra oral scanning, and alginate impressions. Provide home care instructions. Ensure documentation of procedures and all consent signed by parent are included in the patient’s dental chart. 

  • Cleft Lip/Palate Dental/Orthodontic Treatment Program: Assemble orthodontic records for treatment planning. Discuss the parents’ questions and concerns. Send lateral ceph x-ray for tracing. Prepare letters of referral. Prepare billing for orthodontic services. Order orthodontic supplies. Liaise with Cleft Lip/Palate Coordinator to ensure patients are seen in a timely manner. Liaise with the Oral Surgeon and Prosthodontist to coordinate treatment. Book, coordinate and attends min-conference with all the dental specialists. 

  • Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety. 

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Police Record Check (PRC) (Essential)

  • College Diploma or University Degree in Dental Hygiene (Essential)

  • Approximately three (3) years of relevant experience (Essential)

  • Comprehensively use relevant computer technology and specialized dental equipment (Essential)

  • Take steps to ensure timely completion of tasks by adjusting priorities as required (Essential)

  • Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing (Essential)

  • Deal effectively with internal and external customers (Essential)

  • Bilingualism (French and English) (Essential)

Please note that location may be subject to change at any time at the discretion of the employer.
