Work Schedule: Monday–Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with periodic Tuesday–Saturday rotations with advance notice.
Compensation: $29+ per hour with $2 per hour shift differential
Job Summary
This position is responsible for executing, maintaining, and supporting the Valley site environmental, health, and safety department with an emphasis on handling, identification, storage, shipment and recordkeeping of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials. Ensuring the Hazardous Waste Yard is in compliance with all State and Federal environmental safety regulations and standards. The incumbent in this role is responsible for understanding and knowing all of the different materials being stored and sent offsite in addition to maintaining accuracy and signing manifests. The Hazardous Material Technician is also responsible for evaluations, inspections, sampling, investigations, performing waste identification and classification, audits, and inspections, all while maintaining accurate inventory of the various waste streams within the Hazardous Waste Yard.
Essential Functions
- Work with internal and external customers to facilitate proper management and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste under the direction of the Environmental Manager.
- Respond to and assist with cleanup of spills onsite.
- Load or unload materials into containers or on to trucks.
- Identify, characterize, sort and pack hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials for transport and proper disposal.
- Review and sign DOT hazardous material shipping manifests.
- Enter data into Valmont waste tracking software.
- Operate machines or equipment to remove, package, store or transport waste materials.
- Operate fork trucks.
- Drive motor vehicles.
- Clean contaminated equipment or areas for reuse.
- Perform monthly safety inspections and weekly satellite waste accumulation area inspections.
- Comply with prescribed safety procedures and/or laws regulating waste disposal.
- Stay up-to-date technically and apply new knowledge to the job as appropriate.
- Display regular and prompt attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities)
- Associate degree from an accredited college with a coursework in chemistry, environmental science or biological sciences; or, equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid driver's license.
- Certified in or the ability to obtain certification within 180 days:
- 24 hour Hazardous Materials Technician Level Training (29 CFR 1910.120)
- Hazardous Waste Management Training (40 CFR 262.34 (a) (4))
- DOT Hazardous Waste Management Training (49 CFR 172 Sub part H)
- RCRA Part B Post-Closure Training (40 CFR 265.16)
- Forklift certification and demonstration of proper and safe operation
- Within 12 months of employment:
- Haz Woper Training
- Strong analytical problem solving, planning, communication, and follow-through skills.
- Proven initiative to resolve issues in a timely manner.

Skill
- Knowledge of fundamental mathematics.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

This position requires the incumbent to work outside during all seasons of the year, in various manufacturing and storage areas, as well as office environments. As a result, the position may require walking, standing, lifting, stooping, climbing, and occasional use of ladders. This position requires the occasional use of powered industrial material handling equipment. Wearing personal protective equipment appropriate to the job is necessary and may include, but not be limited to: safety glasses, gloves, safety vest, respirator, and hearing protection.
