About the Portfolio

The Operations portfolio provides daily support for RMIT students, academics and staff. We contribute to operational efficiency and help ensure our people, financial and infrastructure needs are met. The portfolio comprises Property Services Group, People, Information Technology Services, Governance and Legal, Finance and Assurance, Enterprise Projects and Business Performance, Data and Analytics.


The Role

Research Infrastructure is a signature initiative for Horizon 2 of RMIT’s Knowledge with Action strategy. The first substantial activity of this initiative is the Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) Platform and creation of a dedicated cross-discipline DRI team between Research and Innovation and Information Technology Services (ITS).  This team directly supports the needs of researchers to deliver scalable research solutions in Data, Compute, Software, Capability and Emerging Technology.

The role of Senior Research Compute Specialist is responsible for having hands-on expert involvement in the development, management and maintenance of RMIT digital research infrastructure platforms, guiding the team to avoid potential problems by shaping the approach taken and having constant oversight on activity, providing recommendations and insight on improvements and updates to be made as and when required.

The role requires a combination of deep technical expertise and the interpersonal skills to engage effectively with diverse groups of stakeholders — from researchers and academics across disciplines to professional staff and external partners. The Senior Research Compute Specialist works closely within a cross-disciplinary environment, translating complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences and building collaborative relationships to deliver outcomes that meet the diverse needs of researchers and advance the university's broader research mission.

About You:

To be successful in this position, you’ll have

  • Experience developing and operating on-premise HPC cluster environments

  • Lead project delivery using Agile methodologies

  • Develop and integrate computational research services with existing enterprise systems.

  • Contribute to HPC infrastructure operations and incident resolution

  • Mentor and lead junior technical staff

  • Experience in HPC cloud computing in either commercial or opensource clouds environments

  • Experience supporting research data storage and data processing pipelines

  • Experience in systems automation and infrastructure as code (e.g. Ansible, CloudFormation, Terraform)

  • Experience in development and maintenance of research software

  • Proven ability to deliver advanced technical consulting to researchers across multiple domains

  • Ability to translate complex research requirements into effective technical computing solutions
