SUMMARY
This is a training position to fully qualify an individual as a Maintenance Mechanic assigned multiple areas to enhance their training capabilities to fill-in for or assist mechanics in any and all areas of the department as needed to meet priorities and handle emergencies. The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Works throughout the department under the direct supervision of more senior personnel assigned to train the apprentice to maintain and repair a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Apprentices are limited to 36 months in the position to demonstrate the skills required of the Repair Shop Mechanic position.
• Train on the maintenance and repair duties involving repairs to gasoline, diesel powered, compressed natural gas (CNG), and electric automotive, transit, heavy and light construction, and other power-driven equipment.
• Ability to learn and take safety precautions and follow procedures associated with the work performed, including lock out/tag out procedures, confined space entry, use of ventilators, handling of hazardous materials and any other safety requirements that may be prescribed.
Upon Successful completion of the apprenticeship, the apprentice will have the opportunity of a full-time employment opportunity with GRTC, which the apprentice will receive a pay increase and additional benefits.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
In accordance with our mission statement, additional duties and / or tasks may be assigned to continue seamless service for the agency.

Education / Experiences / Certifications
• Completion of technical/vocational coursework in automotive mechanics preferred.
• Valid Virginia driver’s license required.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
• Mechanical aptitude preferred.
• Must be able to complete 40-hour work weeks.
• Ability to operate under pressure and not get easily frustrated.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to utilize computer technology.
• Ability to operate vehicles with standard or automatic transmissions.

• Position involves a combination of indoor and outdoor working conditions and exposure to safe levels of diesel and cleaning solvent fumes and lubricating oils and grease.
• Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs.
• Requires frequent bending and kneeling, with occasional climbing.
• Must be able to drive and operate a vehicle.
