Director of Development, W. P. Carey School of Business
The Director of Development is a fundraising professional with strong development experience who implements and executes innovative strategies on behalf of the W. P. Carey School of Business. This position will serve as a generalist across business disciplines focusing on identifying, cultivating, and soliciting support from alumni and friends, many of whom are decision-makers for major corporate and foundation partners. This person will work in collaborative partnership with the W. P. Carey Advancement staff, school leadership and faculty, the W. P. Carey Corporate Development team, ASUF Global Corporate Advancement team and campus leadership aimed at assuring long-term financial support for the ASU Foundation, W. P. Carey and Arizona State University.
What you’ll do
Manages a donor/prospect portfolio with a primary focus on securing gifts at a variety of levels with a personal fundraising goal of at least $2M annually in accordance with performance metrics
Develops and executes strategies to involve school leaders, alumni, friends, and volunteers to identify and cultivate new individual, corporate, institutional and/or foundation prospects
Creates and leads a coordinated program of fundraising and engagement activities designed to increase the number and level of individual and corporate gits; sets approach in partnership with the executive directors for the W. P. Carey Office of advancement’s vision including businesses, corporations, corporate foundations, impact foundations, etc.
Directs collaboration and partnerships with various faculty, institute/center directors, and internal partners to leverage the maximum philanthropic potential working across units to build bridges and increase pitches and proposals in innovative ways
Guides the direction of written proposals, white papers, strategic plans, budgets, and other collateral materials as needed for securing significant ($100k+) philanthropic investments
Prioritizes a high level of collaboration with both internal departments and broader University partners to identify common goals and develop, execute, and advance prospect and donor strategies and increase participation among high-profile donors (i.e., alumni engagement, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, development, donor relations, estate and gift planning, financial services, research, and prospect management)
Ensures the proper stewardship and recognition of donors with appropriate cadence including attending appropriate community events, hosting on-campus meetings, and convening partners and coalitions
Consistently seeks out recurring and new corporate opportunities; maintains a database of opportunities with requirements and deadlines; coordinates corporate opportunities for the school, serving as the WPC lead within a 'One ASU' framework including with internal partners and Global Corporate Advancement to leverage the maximum potential for both the unit and the University
Ensures compliance with prospect management guidelines for tracking and maintenance of contact and progress reporting to corporate partners; assists across foundation teams with corporate reporting
Serves on the WPC Corporate Development Team
Participates as a liaison to the Global Corporate Advancement team via dotted line connection
Maintains up-to-date knowledge on key alumni in corporate leadership roles, oversees continuous research, development, and up-to-date knowledge on prospects, and works with other areas to coordinate contacts
Executes team strategy, at times leading and at other times supporting team members in the office of advancement and across WPC
Participates as a member of the ASUF development team and serves as a resource to development colleagues
What you'll need
Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with academic leadership, faculty, prospects, donors, and/or volunteers in a wide range of roles
Complex problem-solving skills coupled with the ability to conduct research, gather data, analyze information, and prepare effective, accurate, and timely reports and other documents to support development objectives
Strong knowledge and understanding of database management and report writing
Success with grant and/or proposal writing, especially to corporate foundations where concise, technical writing may be required; ability to identify, qualify, delegate, and submit grants sometimes with short turnarounds
Ability to inquire about and understand organizational interests and needs, and determine how to persuade or market to that organization with compelling benefits
Ability to exercise good judgment, to demonstrate an understanding of ethics related to development activities, and to use discretion in interactions with donors, prospects, volunteers, and others
Ability to foster effective working relationships within a team environment
Community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community
Knowledge of fundraising techniques including proposal development, prospect identification, program planning, fund solicitation, database management, donor tracking, and social networking and marketing tools
Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to diverse groups
Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to Foundation and University business and confidential corporate prospect information
Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds
Ability to represent the institution well, both in-person and virtually, and possess an advocate’s belief in the vision of ASU as the New American University
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in donor/prospect computer database systems
Relevant qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
Five (5) to seven (7) years of years of successful professional development and/or fundraising experience
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved
Demonstrated success in developing and implementing effective fundraising strategies, soliciting major gifts, and assessing programs to identify those with strong potential for corporate support
Preferred education and experience
Advanced degree
Five (5) to seven (7) years of years of successful professional development and/or fundraising experience in higher education and/or experience working in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG)
Experience working in Salesforce and Workday
