Regional Environmental Engineer, Environmental
Job Description
You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, environmental experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for environmental aspects while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Join a diverse, dynamic, and enthusiastic team of environmental professionals who play a leading role in environmental permitting and compliance at Amazon Web Services (AWS). The work of our Regional Environmental Engineers is critical to enabling AWS's growth in Ireland and across the EMEA region.
The AWS Environmental team is an expanding and dynamic team that is critical to enabling AWS's growth around the world, as well as ensuring compliance of AWS's global operations, including physical data centres and other AWS facilities. The team has responsibility for architecting and implementing AWS's environmental programmes, including defining and implementing risk management and compliance systems; setting and refining policies and procedures; overseeing the development of standards, tools, auditing and metrics; and engaging with all AWS business units to provide scalable and effective compliance strategies that support current and future business objectives while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
You will partner with AWS stakeholders to develop regional and site-specific development strategies enabling the design, construction and operation of AWS data centres and infrastructure in Ireland. You will lead environmental due diligence for site selection and acquisition, develop and execute regional and site-specific environmental permitting strategies (with a predominant focus on Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) licensing here in Ireland), support environmental compliance during design and construction, and prepare for data centre operations. This role requires regular engagement throughout the development lifecycle with multiple AWS stakeholders including Real Estate, Legal, Risk, Water, Design, Public Policy, Construction, and Operational teams, as well as external stakeholders including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), local authorities, An Coimisiún Pleanála, consultants, and contractors.
A successful candidate in this role will have a proven track record of delivering multiple, high-priority projects with tight timelines that require strong communication with partner teams, outside consultants and counsel, and regulatory agencies. The candidate must have a strong understanding of Irish and EU environmental permitting, licensing, and compliance requirements associated with large-scale infrastructure, with particular experience in Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) licensing, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Appropriate Assessment (AA), and planning consent processes.
Key job responsibilities
• Support the delivery of environmental permitting and licensing workstreams on data centre projects, including Industrial Emissions Licence (IEL) applications to the EPA, Environmental Impact Assessment Reports (EIAR), EIA screening, Appropriate Assessment (AA), and other environmental inputs to planning applications.
• Assess environmental risks and requirements and develop mitigations and strategies to support data centre development strategies and site-specific project delivery.
• Implement technical aspects of environmental due diligence, including Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, regulatory and permitting evaluations, natural and ecological resource evaluations, noise assessments, and air quality assessments.
• Deliver environmental permits, licences, approvals, and plans to enable on-time and compliant construction and operations for new data centre locations and expansion of existing sites.
• Manage post-consent environmental compliance obligations including licence conditions, monitoring, reporting, and follow-up actions prior to sites becoming operational.
• Communicate environmental requirements, risks, and activities to internal and external project partners.
• Coordinate with partner teams including Real Estate, Design, Water, Legal, Risk, Power, Public Policy, and others to optimise site designs considering natural resource or operational constraints to ensure future build out remains environmentally compliant.
• Develop site development and permitting strategies that are environmentally responsible and sustainable while meeting project timelines.
• Lead regulatory agency interactions and negotiations with the EPA, local authorities, and An Coimisiún Pleanála in support of environmental licence and permit acquisition and regional development strategies.
• Lead consultation and engagement with key external stakeholders and statutory authorities as required on projects.
• Procure and manage external environmental consultants, and review technical inputs to environmental consenting documentation.
• Develop detailed compliance plans for environmental licences and permits as sites go live.
• Develop, manage, and track metrics to evaluate project success and compliance status.
• Maintain involvement in relevant industry working groups; keep expert knowledge of environmental consenting, related legislation and key legal judgements, and advise on these to inform AWS planning strategy in Ireland.
• Provide strategic environmental consenting expertise for data centre development across AWS projects, programmes, and portfolios in Ireland.
