About Oil and Gas Technology: OGT is a team of around 200 scientists and engineers who develop and provide pioneering solutions to support bp’s Production and Operations (P&O) and Gas and Low Carbon Energy (G&LCE) businesses.

The Reservoir Recovery Unit sits in OGT team, part of Applied Sciences Technology. The team is part of the 60-strong Subsurface and Wells group, working closely with P&O to develop innovative technological solutions addressing both near- and longer-term challenges. The Reservoir Recovery Unit is the home of the Dynamic Displacement laboratory, which provides unique experimental capability and delivers data across waterflood/gasflood, special core analysis (SCAL, including relative permeability), enhanced oil recovery, production assurance (production chemistry) and Wells technology.

You will lead the Reservoir Recovery lab team, providing guidance, coaching, technical support and quality assurance to the SCAL and imaging scientists working in the lab, collaborating closely with the site and unit leads to provide smooth integrated lab operations and support to the business.

Job Purpose and primary objectives:

You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Reservoir Recovery Dynamic displacement laboratory. You will work closely with the site leadership, the Unit Lead and collaborators in the business to ensure safe and timely delivery of experimental data in support of bp’s regional operations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensure lab safety compliance by owning and leading all safety aspects, aligning with bp’s standards, and supporting equipment operators in adhering to Control of Work, Inspection & Maintenance, and Management of Change requirements.

  • Be responsible for the laboratory work backlog, assigning studies and tasks across the team and experimental assets, while partnering with the Unit Lead to maintain a robust pipeline of future work.

  • Supervise the laboratory operating budget (OPEX) to ensure effective cost management and resource utilization.

  • Collaborate with site leadership and engineering teams to ensure compliance with operational procedures and seek opportunities to drive workflow alignments across teams.

  • Drive continuous improvement in lab efficiency and data quality, including the development and implementation of automation solutions where appropriate.

  • Lead and develop the lab team by providing technical coaching and mentorship.

  • Maintain expertise in SCAL and relevant reservoir engineering practices, and share best practices with the team.

  • Represent the laboratory in collaborator engagements, maintaining and enhancing the reputation of the Reservoir Recovery Unit both internally and externally.

Primary Skills:

  • At least ten years of strong laboratory based scientific background with expertise in SCAL and reservoir condition experimentation.

  • Demonstrate confirmed leadership capability, with the ability to lead and develop high-performing technical teams.

  • Strong project management and organisational skills, optimally planning, prioritizing, and delivering complex laboratory studies in a dynamic environment.

  • A conscientious and inclusive leadership style to foster agility and teamwork.

  • Good communication skills.

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or master's degree in engineering or relevant science, or equivalent.

  • Hands on experience of lab work, including planning, executing and reporting studies.

  • Experience prioritising lab safety processes.

Other

  • Travel – up to 10%.
