Qualifications:
Required: Must be a licensed, registered nurse in the state of Missouri. CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications.
Preferred: Bachelor of Science � Nursing. One to three years professional nursing experience.
FLSA: Exempt

Purpose: The substitute school nurse will serve in a staff capacity with department heads, principals and teachers in assuming the responsibilities of organizing, developing and providing the school health services that are approved and designed by the School District of St. Joseph. The substitute nurse will strengthen the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning for individual students and by promoting the optimal level of wellness for students and staff in the absence of the regular school nurse.
Essential Job Functions:
- Attend work in a regular, reliable and punctual manner.
- Administers first aid, medication and specialized medical treatments (e.g. oral suctioning, catheterization, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.
- Assesses situations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug, etc.) and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements.
- Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or public agencies for the purpose of promoting and/or securing student health services, providing information and complying with legal requirements.
- Maintains confidential files and records (e.g. health care plans, agency referrals, accident reports, immunizations, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards.
- Maintains complete and accurate documentation of all nursing care and activities within the scope of school nursing functions for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards.
- Maintains contact with parents/guardians for the purpose of advising them of changes in student health and/or recommending further medical and/or emotional intervention.
- Reports health and safety issues to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies (e.g. fights, suspected child or substance abuse, contagious diseases, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students' personal safety, a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
- Responds to emergency medical situations (e.g. severe falls, prescription reactions, bleeding, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and related follow-up action.
- Perform other such duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Coordinator of Nursing/Health Services, Director of Human Resources and Building Principal.
- Consult as appropriate, with the building Principal, School Nurse, or Coordinator of Nursing/Health Services before initiating any procedure not specified by the absent School Nurse.
- Follows all policies, rules and procedures to which School Nurses are subject and which good nursing practice dictates.
- Must be available to work at least 1 shift every 4 weeks and keep up to date on nurse meeting notes.
