Job Description

Position Summary

The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the Produce Department. This role is responsible for ensuring high-quality presentation, fresh product availability, food safety compliance, and delivering an exceptional customer experience. The Assistant Produce Manager helps drive sales, manages inventory, and leads department associates to meet operational and financial goals.

Key Responsibilities Department Operations
  • Assist in managing all daily Produce Department operations
  • Ensure proper rotation, stocking, and replenishment of all produce items
  • Maintain clean, organized, and visually appealing displays
  • Monitor product quality and remove unacceptable items promptly
  • Execute merchandising plans and seasonal displays
Inventory & Ordering
  • Support ordering and receiving processes to maintain optimal inventory levels
  • Assist in controlling shrink, spoilage, and waste
  • Verify all deliveries for accuracy, quality, and compliance
  • Maintain proper backroom organization and storage standards
Customer Experience
  • Provide outstanding customer service and resolve customer concerns
  • Ensure product freshness, availability, and clear pricing/signage
  • Educate customers on produce selection, storage, and preparation when needed
Food Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure full compliance with food safety and sanitation standards
  • Maintain proper temperature controls and handling procedures
  • Adhere to company policies and regulatory requirements
  • Support audit readiness and execution
Leadership & Team Development
  • Assist in supervising, training, and developing Produce associates
  • Support scheduling and ensure proper labor coverage
  • Provide coaching and feedback to improve team performance
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and productive work environment
Sales & Performance
  • Support efforts to achieve department sales and profitability goals
  • Monitor movement of high-volume and seasonal items
  • Assist in execution of weekly ads and promotional plans
  • Identify opportunities to improve sales and reduce shrink
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 1–3 years of experience in retail, grocery, or produce operations preferred
  • Strong knowledge of fresh produce handling and quality standards
  • Basic understanding of inventory and merchandising principles
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
Work Environment
  • Regular standing, walking, lifting, and bending
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Work in varied temperature environments (coolers and sales floor)
  • Flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays
