Job Summary
Under supervision, the Orthopedic Technologist provides specialized support in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of orthopedic conditions. This role assists with the application of casts, braces, splints, and other orthopedic devices and may also support surgical procedures as needed.Patient Care Required: Yes
Essential Functions
• Set up and apply traction in accordance with standard procedures and instructions.
• Assist with the application of casts, braces, and prostheses.
• Requisition, store, and dispense supplies as directed.
• Inspect and maintain orthopedic equipment.
• Instruct selected patients in cast care, simple exercises, and crutch or cane use.
• Apply sterile and non-sterile dressings.
• Make splints, slings, and foot pieces.
• May make rounds with doctors for orthopedic patients and carry out instructions.
• Cut and fashion devices from metal, plastic, leather, and wood using equipment and hand tools.
Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience may not be accepted in lieu of a degree.
Licenses and Credentials
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification preferred.
- Orthopaedic Technologist Certification (OTC) from the National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists, Inc. preferred.
Experience
- Two to three years of related patient care experience required.
- Zero to one year of orthopedic experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- General knowledge of standard orthopedic procedures and practices.
- Working knowledge of orthopedic devices and appliances, including proper fitting.
- Knowledge of medical terminology related to orthopedics.
- Ability to communicate effectively when instructing patients in the use and care of orthopedic devices and appliances.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with diverse patient populations.
