Under supervision of the Weld Shop Lead, or Marine Repair Superintendent, the seamstress designs, makes, alters, repairs, or fits marine canvas and upholstery. Ensures that the fit, alter, repair, make, and made-to-measure canvas meets customers' and/or manufacturers' specifications and desires. The Seamstress's responsibilities are to ensure that all tasks are completed efficiently and on time. They work with industrial sewing machines, needles, and custom equipment to fabricate tailored customer requests. They work as a team and understand the daily mission and processes of providing excellent customer service to the customer.


Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain sewing machines and related parts, including pattern plates, needles, presser feet, automatic cutting tools, and blades.
  • Repair clothing with thread, material, zippers, and buttons of the same type, texture, manufacture quality, color, and colorfastness.
  • Mend small rips and tears (one inch or less) unless they are identified as damaged at the turn-in time.
  • Replace missing hardware on canvas and upholstery
  • Read and interpret work orders and adjust machines and materials to match, including selecting fabric, thread, and needles, mounting necessary attachments.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications: Education/Certifications: One year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required
  • Experience:
    • Three (3) years of experience working as a seamstress, sailmaker, or canvas maker, to include self-employment.
  • Skills:
    • Able to replace missing buttons on canvas.
    • Able to mend small rips and tears.
    • Able to repair clothing with thread, material, zippers, and buttons.
    • Able to design, make, alter, and fit garments.
    • Able to troubleshoot basic machinery problems and request service or repairs as needed.
    • Able to ensure materials used for repair and replacement match and be equal to or better than those used in the manufacture of the article.
    • Able to read and interpret work orders and adjust machines and materials to match, including selecting fabric, thread, and needles, mounting necessary attachments.
    • Able to inspect and repair finished products as needed and make machine adjustments to compensate for errors or quality issues.
    • Able to record accurately the materials used, maintenance performed, and the number of pieces completed during each shift.
    • Able to prepare materials for machine embroidery and other automatic embellishment, including securing the fabric in hoops, templates, or clamps and guiding it into the machine.
    • Able to assist with other laundry operations as needed.
  • Working Conditions:
    • Must be capable of working in an extreme weather conditions with temperatures exceeding 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • Indoor and/or outdoor environment with very adverse and harsh conditions (i.e., hot, wet, tropical environment with average temperatures of 85 degrees in the summer months).
    • Includes some industrial production environment conditions as well.
    • The worker is subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
    • Work may require heavy lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents.
    • Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for some situations. PPE includes, but is not limited to, head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices.
    • Must comply with all Fire and Safety Regulations and post policies
