Job Summary:
Prepares surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for diagnostic microscopic examination.Demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors and other employees regardless of cultural background.
Job Description:
- Uses HIS & LIS computer systems to order, view ordered tests, process workload, perform testing and charge tests.
- Performs special procedure to demonstrate infection, tumor identification, tissue components, antibody detection.
- Keeps records for workload recording, preventive maintenance on equipment and quality control to meet the Medical Center's continuing quality improvement standards.
- Disposes or files old slides, tissue, or autopsy tissue, as directed by CAP regulations and prepares limbs and fetus for burial to ensure a safe working environment.
- Prepares specimens for send out: ERA/PRA, muscle biopsies, and slides or recuts for consultation send-outs, to facilitate patient diagnosis.
- Performs and has a general understanding of laboratory procedures and directs questions and inconsistencies to the supervisor to assure accurate patient results.
- Enhances professional growth and development of self, department staff, other hospital personnel, community and students by participation in continuing education, and in-service training and the School of Medical Technology.
- Implements ICARE principles using communication skills and human relations to promote quality patient care and productive working environment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
- ASCP Registered Histotechnician OR
- Qualifies under the “grandfather clause”; having established a career (>5 yrs.) as a qualified Histotechnician prior to 2004 but did not obtain ASCP certification.
