JOB SUMMARY

The FLATO Markham Theatre is currently seeking House Managers on a temporary part-time basis. The House Manager is responsible for providing front line guidance and direction to Ushers, Bar and Box office staff thereby helping to facilitate audience enjoyment, comfort and safety during each performance.

Hours of Work: This is a temporary part-time position that would require a minimum availability of up to three shifts per week. The majority of shifts occur in the evenings, weekends and holidays with the occasional shift during the day. This position has the potential for training to take place over the summer but consistent weekly hours will not be available until mid to late September onwards.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Opens and closes theatre for shows
  • Clarifies performance schedule with technicians and client production representatives
  • Briefs all staff on event information, schedule, and positioning, as well as any special instructions
  • Completes administrative duties related to events such as post-show reports, creation and maintenance of signage, and e-mail communications to Theatre staff
  • Ensures lobby and green room is clean and prepared for patrons, and VIPs when applicable
  • Ensures entryways and public areas are safe, clear of ice or snow and not slippery
  • Monitors sales, troubleshoots P.O.S. system as necessary
  • Oversees smooth execution of receptions, house seating, bar service, and usher duties
  • Addresses any issues brought up from patrons according to policies and procedures, to the best of your ability as they arise

REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma is required. College/University education in Theatre is preferred
  • Prior experience in a theatre or in similar fast-paced environment.
  • Experience handling cash
  • Prior experience managing and assigning work to staff and volunteers is required
  • Experience responding appropriately to customer issues
  • Ability to work flexible hours on weekdays, weeknights, and weekends
  • Current certifications in Standard First Aid OR Intermediate First Aid with CPR C or AED 
  • Certified Smart Serve
  • Good understanding of safety and evacuation procedures in case of an emergency
  • General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook is an asset
