Role synopsis

The Operations Petrophysicist role supports bp’s Brazil offshore portfolio by providing critical petrophysical input to the planning, execution, and assurance of drilling and completion operations. The role exists to ensure the safe, reliable, and high-quality acquisition and interpretation of formation evaluation data, directly influencing well delivery, development decisions, and subsurface understanding.

Working closely with wells, subsurface, and operations teams, the role integrates petrophysical expertise with real-time operational support and post-well evaluation. The position involves regular engagement with offshore operations and service providers to ensure formation evaluation programs are performed in line with bp standards, local regulatory requirements, and procedures, with a strong focus on safety, value, and continuous improvement.

Key accountabilities

• Plan, implement, and assure wireline, logging-while-drilling (LWD), and associated formation evaluation activities to support safe and efficient offshore well delivery in Brazil.

• Provide timely and practical petrophysical input into well objectives, logging programs, and completion recommendations, clearly communicating subsurface uncertainty and operational risk.

• Support real-time operations as required, working with offshore teams to ensure data quality and operational execution meet expectations. Some offshore travel may be required, especially during key data acquisition operations.

• Manage and assure service company performance for logging and coring services, focusing on safety performance, data quality, and delivery against agreed objectives.

• Ensure all formation evaluation activities stay in sync with bp technical practices, the New Well Delivery common process, and applicable local regulations.

• Contribute to post-well reviews, non-productive time analysis, and lessons learned to continuously improve formation evaluation delivery across Brazil assets.

Essential education

• Degree in Geology, Geophysics, Geoscience, Physics, Petroleum Engineering, or a related technical subject area, or equivalent industry experience.

Essential experience and job requirements

• Highly skilled and experienced professional in petrophysics or formation evaluation, with direct involvement in operational wireline and/or LWD data acquisition.

• Experience supporting high tier deepwater offshore drilling operations, with a focus on high technology delivery including fluid sampling, rotary coring, advanced petrophysical logs and conveyance techniques.

• Solid understanding of open-hole petrophysical interpretation and integration of log data for reservoir description and operational decision-making.

• Experience working within multidisciplinary teams spanning wells, drilling, completions, and subsurface functions. Ability to work independently while also accessing input and support from SME’s and other technical expertise.

• Proven ability to work effectively with service companies and offshore personnel to ensure safe, reliable delivery of logging services.

• Working knowledge of industry-standard petrophysical software such as Techlog or equivalent.

• Strong English communication skills, with the ability to present clear, concise technical recommendations to operational and subsurface partners.

Desirable criteria

• Experience supporting Brazil offshore assets, including pre-salt exploration and developments.

• Experience in cased-hole logging acquisition and interpretation, including cement evaluation and production logging while drill stem testing.

• Experience participating in supplier performance reviews or technical assurance activities.

• Experience in conventional full bore core acquisition and processing.

• Experience contributing to mentoring, coaching, or informal technical development activities, especially in other basins.
