Mechanical / Thermal Engineer
Job Description
WHAT YOU DO AT AMD CHANGES EVERYTHING
At AMD, our mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences—from AI and data centers, to PCs, gaming and embedded systems
Grounded in a culture of innovation and collaboration, we believe real progress comes from bold ideas, human ingenuity and a shared passion to create something extraordinary
When you join AMD, you’ll discover the real differentiator is our culture
We push the limits of innovation to solve the world’s most important challenges—striving for execution excellence, while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives
Join us as we shape the future of AI and beyond. Together, we advance your career.
THE ROLE:
Join an innovative mechanical/thermal engineering team at the forefront of advanced liquid cooling technology
As a Mechanical/Thermal Engineer, you'll play a hands-on role in bringing cutting-edge cooling solutions from concept to reality—designing sleek cold plates and work with sophisticated Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs) that solve real-world thermal challenges for high-performance systems.
This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer eager to dive deep into thermal-fluid systems
You'll split your time between the lab and your CAD workstation, running validation tests one day and optimizing designs the next
Working within our collaborative Agile framework, you'll interact daily with experienced thermal engineers, test technicians, and cross-functional product teams who will mentor you as you grow your expertise in thermal management.
Whether you're analyzing heat transfer performance, building prototypes, or troubleshooting in the lab, you'll gain comprehensive exposure to the full product development lifecycle
If you're passionate about thermal engineering, love hands-on problem-solving, and want to see your designs come to life in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment, this role offers the perfect launchpad for your engineering career.
THE PERSON:
The right person for this role thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where technical excellence meets collaborative innovation. You're naturally curious and driven to continuously expand your skillset—whether that's mastering a new thermal simulation tool, diving deeper into two-phase cooling phenomena, or learning from the expertise of senior engineers around you.
Success in this position requires strong communication skills and the ability to work seamlessly across boundaries. You'll regularly partner with electrical engineers, product managers, test technicians, and manufacturing teams, so being able to clearly articulate technical concepts, actively listen to different perspectives, and build consensus is essential. You're equally comfortable presenting test results to your immediate team as you are explaining thermal design constraints to non-technical stakeholders.
You embrace challenge as an opportunity to grow
Our competitive, high-stakes environment demands resilience, adaptability, and a solutions-oriented mindset
When a prototype doesn't perform as expected or requirements shift mid-sprint, you stay composed, pivot quickly, and work collaboratively to find the best path forward.
Above all, you're a team player who values both individual contribution and collective success
You take ownership of your deliverables while recognizing that the best solutions emerge through collaboration
If you're someone who thrives on learning, enjoys the energy of cross-functional teamwork, and is energized rather than intimidated by ambitious technical challenges, you'll find a home on our thermal engineering team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design & Development
Develop 3D CAD models and detailed drawings for liquid cooling components (cold plates, CDUs, manifolds) using SolidWorks and/or Creo
Conduct thermal and fluid flow analyses to optimize cooling performance and ensure designs meet specifications
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate thermal solutions into broader system architectures
Support design for manufacturability (DFM) reviews and iterate designs based on feedback from manufacturing partners
Testing & Validation
Design and execute experimental test plans to validate thermal performance, pressure drop, and reliability of cooling systems
Build and instrument test fixtures, configure data acquisition systems, and operate laboratory equipment
Analyze test data, identify trends and anomalies, and generate comprehensive test reports with actionable insights
Troubleshoot prototype issues and implement design improvements based on empirical findings
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Participate in Agile sprint ceremonies, contributing to planning, daily standups, and retrospectives
Interface with electrical engineering teams to understand thermal requirements and cooling constraints
Work with manufacturing and supply chain teams to ensure smooth transition from prototype to production
Communicate technical findings and design rationale to stakeholders across multiple business units
Continuous Improvement & Learning
Stay current with industry trends in datacenter liquid cooling technologies and best practices
Proactively develop skills in thermal simulation tools, experimental techniques, and advanced cooling concepts
