The Division of Cardiac Surgery at UC Irvine Health provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care for patients with complex cardiovascular disease. The Division is committed to excellence in patient care, education, research, quality improvement, and innovation. Advanced Practice Providers play a critical role in delivering coordinated, patient-centered care across the continuum of cardiac surgical services. The Nurse Practitioner Supervisor provides clinical, operational, and administrative leadership for the APP team and collaborates with physician, nursing, and administrative leadership to support exceptional patient care, operational excellence, and divisional goals. Your Role on the Team Supervises Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants) within the Division of Cardiac Surgery. Provides clinical, operational, and administrative oversight to APP staff responsible for patient evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing patient management across inpatient and outpatient settings. Provides oversight for APP staffing, scheduling, onboarding, competency assessment, performance management, professional development, quality initiatives, and clinical practice standardization across the Division. Serves as a clinical resource and liaison between APP staff, physicians, nursing leadership, and administrative leadership to ensure efficient operations, high-quality patient care, compliance with departmental and institutional standards, and achievement of divisional goals while maintaining an active clinical practice and providing patient care and clinical coverage as needed. What It Takes to be Successful Required: Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and manage complex workflows and competing priorities involved with providing quality care as a Nurse Practitioner. Solid knowledge of the clinical and operational issues related to advanced- practice nursing, including evaluation, testing, diagnosis, treatment, patient-care concepts, policies, outcomes measurement, quality standards, ethics, quality improvement, and continuing staff education and professional development Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, document staff performance, and participate in decision-making on human resources matters Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to determine appropriate levels of intervention and implement effective solutions. Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with clinical staff, leadership, consultants, researchers, and outside agencies; train and mentor staff; and convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner. Knowledge of clinical and administrative software, specialized applications, and data management systems used in advanced-practice nursing, documentation, quality improvement, and employee supervision. Minimum ten (10) years of experience as a Registered Nurse and/or Advanced Practice Provider in a Cardiac ICU, Cardiovascular ICU, or closely related critical care setting. Minimum ten (10) years of advanced practice experience in Cardiac Surgery. Minimum two (2) to five (5) years of progressive leadership, lead, charge, supervisory, or management experience in a healthcare setting. Demonstrated experience supervising Advanced Practice Providers in a cardiac surgery, cardiovascular, transplant, or academic healthcare environment. Demonstrated experience leading quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical outcomes initiatives. Demonstrated experience developing APP onboarding, orientation, continuing education, and training programs. Strong knowledge of APP clinical operations, workflow design, staffing models, and interdisciplinary care delivery. Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage competing priorities, and communicate effectively across multiple disciplines and levels of leadership. Experience caring for advanced heart failure and heart transplant patients. Experience in an academic medical center. Experience with APP recruitment, onboarding, and workforce development. Experience leading clinical protocol development and care standardization initiatives. Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse (RN) license. Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license. National certification as a Nurse Practitioner. Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG) certification preferred for cardiac surgery practice. Current, active, unrestricted Furnishing Number and DEA registration. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Active National Provider Identifier (NPI). American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) certification required for Nurse Practitioner candidates, or other cardiac/critical care certification relevant to advanced practice nursing. Preferred: Demonstrated experience with APP scheduling, staffing, onboarding, performance management, quality improvement initiatives, workflow redesign, and operational program development. Knowledge of UC Health, Joint Commission, CMS, and other regulatory requirements affecting advanced practice providers. Master's in Business Administration (MBA), healthcare leadership certification, or equivalent leadership training. Advanced degree in Nursing and / or equivalent experience / training Education Master's degree in nursing or related field, and/or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc). Special Conditions: Ability to obtain and maintain UC Irvine Medical Center Allied Health Professional privileges.
