Job Description

Join AXA XL's Construction team as a Senior Underwriter specializing in Subcontractor Default Insurance (SDI) and related products

In this dynamic role, you'll leverage your expertise to assess complex construction risks, develop innovative insurance solutions, and build strong relationships with brokers and contractors across Canada

You'll work collaboratively across business divisions while maintaining a profitable portfolio and driving strategic growth for one of the industry's leading specialty insurers

What you’ll be doing Your focus is to establish influential relationships internally and externally and to act as the critical interface between the broker and clients and the company

You are expected to continuously contribute to improving current working and underwriting practices

Business Development & Risk Assessment – Acquire new business and manage renewals with approved brokers; conduct technical risk assessments, pricing analysis, and deal structuring for sophisticated general contractors Underwriting Excellence – Apply skillful, decisive underwriting judgment to evaluate applications, terms, loss history, and financial statements; determine risk degree based on company guidelines and underwriting authority Creative Risk Solutions – Design innovative risk transfer solutions tailored to unique customer needs while protecting AXA XL's profitability and maintaining portfolio performance Cross-Functional Collaboration – Coordinate seamlessly with Risk Engineering, Actuarial, Claims, Reinsurance, Accounting, and other internal teams to support underwriting decisions and drive product density Relationship Management – Establish and nurture robust relationships internally and externally, serving as the critical interface between brokers, clients, and the company Continuous Improvement – Contribute to enhancing underwriting practices and industry leadership in construction technology and sustainability You will report to the Chief Underwriting Office, Large Commercial- Canada

What you’ll bring We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills: College degree or equivalent experience

Moderate Construction underwriting experience (SDI, Property, Casualty or Surety) or brokerage equivalent

Experience with Large Loss Sensitive programs and/or Loss Prevention is a plus

Robust analytical and problem-solving skills as well as strong sales and marketing abilities

Ability to effectively communicate and negotiate with senior personnel, brokers and clients

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required

Effective computer skills (MS Office) are critical for the success of this position

This position requires willingness for flexible work hours and travel up to 20% of the time

The Canada base salary range for this position is CAD (122,000 to 171,000)

Actual pay will be determined based upon the individual’s skills, experience and location
