Job Description
The University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC) is seeking highly motivated Physician Assistant Residents to join our Critical Care Residency Program for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). This is a one-year, post-graduate training program designed to prepare Physician Assistants for advanced practice in critical care medicine through structured education, simulation-based training, and supervised clinical experience.
Program Overview
The Critical Care APP Residency Program provides intensive, hands-on training in both medical and surgical intensive care units. Residents will develop critical thinking, procedural skills, and clinical judgment necessary to manage complex, critically ill patients across a broad range of acute care settings.
Key Learning Experiences
Residents will gain progressive responsibility and experience in:
- Management of critically ill patients in ICU settings
- Participation in daily rounds, admissions, and care planning
- Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests and imaging studies
- Performing procedures under direct supervision
- Exposure to multidisciplinary critical care teams and specialty services
- Ultrasound training and point-of-care assessment techniques
- Participation in simulation-based learning with high-fidelity mannequins
- Education on documentation, billing, and evidence-based practice in critical care
Procedural Training Includes
Residents will receive supervised training in procedures such as:
- Endotracheal intubation
- Ultrasound-guided central and arterial line placement
- Thoracentesis and chest tube insertion
- Paracentesis
- Lumbar puncture
- Bronchoscopy
- Bedside tracheostomy
Program Highlights

- Exposure to grand rounds, journal clubs, morbidity & mortality conferences, and radiology interpretation sessions

Work Schedule & Expectations
- Fast-paced, high-acuity clinical environment
- 5–6 days per week, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Full participation in all clinical and educational activities required
- Progressive development of clinical independence under supervision
