Position Summary / Career Interest:
The Specialty Pharmacy Supervisor oversees the daily activities of a team of specialty pharmacists and patient financial advocates, providing pharmaceutical care within their program or area of responsibility. The supervisor skillfully adjusts staffing and applies problem-solving techniques to support the team's daily work. This supervisor identifies opportunities to manage costs through effective use of drugs, supply and labor resources. Under the supervision of this leader, the specialty pharmacy team adopts an expectation of continuous improvement with focus on quality and safety in alignment with health system goals. The supervisor understands and maintains competency in the performance of responsibilities typically covered by the team to ensure effectiveness in assisting the team in understanding priorities and goals. This leader exhibits collaborative interdisciplinary communication and strong educational skills. This leader supports efforts to maintain specialty pharmacy accreditation. Support from this supervisor will help specialty pharmacists and patient financial advocates expand their ability to perform daily patient-specific or department-specific tasks relative to their area of expertise along with supporting the personal goals for professional development.Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
- Demonstrates competence in the area of critical thinking, interpersonal relationships and technical skills
- Demonstrates ability to provide care/service safely and efficiently for the care of each patient.
- Continually reports medication incidents and adverse drug reactions and participates in medication incident review, peer review, or other activities to establish safe medication systems.
- Does not spend majority of time performing the work supervised
- Demonstrates personal effectiveness in leading the team towards its goals in direct suprervision of pharmacy employees.
- Sets priorities for the team to ensure task completion; coordinates work activities with other supervisors
- Uses labor resources effectively by maintaining awareness of daily workload and workflow challenges to optimize the utilization of all existing labor resources.
- Provides proposals for approval when labor or equipment needs have financial implications.
- Identifies opportunites to manage costs through effective drug utlization and labor use.
- Decisions are guided by policies, procedures and the local business plan; receives guidance and oversight from manager
- Leads and coordinates the clinical and operational activities of the assigned program and oversees processes, ensuring compliance with policies, standards, and regulations
- Conducts pharmaceutical procurement and resource utilization with economic and clinical consideration
- Coordinates training and education for pharmacy staff related to program initiatives
- Ensures patient safety and quality, optimizes service and supports people through accountability, application of effective problem-solving techniques and continual improvement.
- §Supervises the daily activities of individual contributors on a business support, technical or support services team
- Supervises daiily activities of individual contributors, ensuring adequate staffing coverage to meet customer needs and adjusting based on team member availability and workload.
- Identifies strengths of team members and assists frontline employees in leveraging those strengths in their work
- Handles recruitment and all aspects of personnel management supporting the development of each team member.
- Leads team through participation in huddles, teams, committees and interdisciplinary efforts ensuring systems, processes, and workflows meet expectations and follow policies and procedures.
- Shares pharmaceutical expertise by coordinating and providing educational presentations or in-services for pharmacy and non-pharmacy staff.
- Serves as an effective communicator of the organization's vision and goals and the pharmacy's role in achieving those.
- Actively displays and promotes the priniciples and behaviors of our Pharmacy Culture.
- Fosters collaborative relationships with peers and stakeholders with a focus on exceptional service to internal and external customers.
- " Serves as an ambassador of the organization’s vision and goals and the department’s role in achieving those by expressing ideas clearly and effectively (gaining agreement and/or understanding), adjusting language, terminology, and style to the characteristics and needs of the audience as well as the venue for the communication"
- Participates in projects or committees resulting in contributions to the pharmacy department, profession of pharmacy, external publication and/or poster presentation for local, regional, or national pharmacy association.
- Assures compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations and accreditation standards relative to the acquisition, storage, handling, record keeping and dispensing of pharmaceuticals, provision of pharmacy services and patient care.
- Identifies personal, professional development needs and maintains a plan for continued growth.
- Optimizes patient care and serves as subject matter expert on best practice in areas of focus.
- Supports pharmacy residency programs, clerkship students, and interns by precepting organized rorations, providing timely and constructive feedback, participating in training and orientation, providing mentorship and collaborating on projects and presentations.
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
- Bachelors Degree or Doctorate in Pharmacy
- Completion of an ASHP accredited PGY-1 and PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency Program OR
- Completion of an ASHP accredited PGY-1 and PGY-2 Pharmacy Administration Residency Program OR
- Completion of an ASHP accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program plus years of practice experience in area of focus
- 4 or more years of practice experience in area of focus in lieu of residency
Preferred Education and Experience
- Master's Degree in Pharmacy Administration, Health Administration or Business Administration
Required Licensure and Certification
- Licensed Pharmacist - State Board of Pharmacy by the applicable State Board of Pharmacy prior to employment
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA)
Preferred Licensure and Certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - American Heart Association (AHA)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association (AHA)
- Board Certification awarded by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties
- Other focused training program or professional involvement relative to area of focus
Knowledge Requirements
- Inforrmal leadership involvement in quality, safety or improvement initiatives
