Overview:

We have an opening for a Director for the Facilities Management Division within the Facilities & Operations Directorate. In this role you will be responsible for managing all aspects of the conventional and radiological facilities to ensure the operations and maintenance of the Laboratory are carried out in an effective and efficient manner that supports the research and other missions of the Laboratory. Your focus will be on providing strategic direction, support and guidance to the employees of the division daily.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and vision in developing facility management strategies and missions and communicate them to the customers, management, and staff
  • Establish and support a culture that focuses on the needs of the customers
  • Assist the managers or supervisors with resolving issues that arise, responding to new requirements, or implementing various division, directorate, or ORNL initiatives
  • Determine budget needs and allocations to support ORNL facilities
  • Prepare and implement division plans, develop solutions, and set priorities
  • Identify and implement consequential safety, productivity, and process improvements
  • Maintain relationships with key internal and external customers, and lead the implementation and flow down of DOE requirements to ORNL
  • Ensure facility engineering work is technically sound and strategically planned across the laboratory to achieve highly reliable compliance while ensuring reliable operations and maintenance of ORNL facilities
  • Positively interact with a wide-variety of ORNL staff and clients at all levels and resolve and or advise management on a wide range of administrative and or technical issues
  • Authorize work and ensure work activities are performed safely, securely, effectively and in compliance environmental, safety, health, and quality requirements, applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Build and maintain a work environment which promotes collaboration, performance, feedback, recognition, mutual respect, and employee engagement
  • Identify staffing needs; recruit, select and retain highly qualified and diverse staff
  • Establish and ensure an open and supportive working environment where staff report issues and concerns
  • Ensure staff is properly trained to meet present and future needs by building new competencies and supporting long-term staff development
  • Collaborate with other F&O division directors and lab leadership to strategically ensure F&O sustains operational excellence in facilities modernization, systems and processes, personnel development, and digital technology deployment

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS or BA degree in engineering or a related field
  • A minimum of twelve years of experience in operations and facility management (or related field) with a minimum of five years in a supervisory or managerial capacity

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS or MA degree in Engineering, Business Administration or related field
  • Experience managing complex scientific support activities
  • Knowledge of technical issues, research activities and the impact of facility conditions and changes on tenant activities
  • Strong record of safe operations and safety improvement activities
  • Familiarity with labor relations principles and working within a collective bargaining union contract environment is highly desirable
  • Excellent oral and written communications, leadership, interpersonal, and problem solving skills will lead to success in this position

 

Special Requirements:

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
