What is a Manufacturing Engineering Internship (Electrical bias)?


Our Manufacturing Engineering Internship provides the Global Operations Division with talent to meet the high demand of the division. The placement is 12 months in duration and will provide an excellent opportunity to learn and work as an essential member of the Engineering team.

At Llantrisant we produce Optical and analytical instruments requiring precise manufacturing processes and careful change management. You will contribute in many ways to support the division; this includes understanding our manufactured instruments, supporting our production engineers and processing engineering design changes. At Llantrisant we work to ISO90001 and ISO13485 giving you the chance to understand these different standards and their requirements.

This role will allow you to develop your understanding of low volume, high value precision instrument manufacturing. As Electrical bias you will be dealing with electrical drawing and diagrams, along with a variety of purchased electrical sub-assemblies (e.g. relays and pre-manufactured cables)

Description of 12-month Internship:

  • Design Change Analysis: Review and assess impact of design modifications on manufacturing processes, is the proposed design change fit for purpose? Understand the range of reasons for design changes such and obsolescence, design improvements and cost down. 

  • Change Validation: Support testing and validation of design modifications in manufacturing environment.

  • Implementation Planning: Develop methodical approaches for rolling out design changes to production, working closing with our SAP implementation specialist.

  • Planning and Purchasing Liaison: Understanding the impact engineering changes have on manufacturing stocks, lead times and manufacturing output capacity.

  • Manufacturing Liaison: Work directly with production teams to ensure smooth transition of modified designs.

  • Process Documentation: Update work instructions, SOPs, and manufacturing documentation following design changes.

  • Change management: Follow engineering change process through to completion using bespoke software.

General Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing BEng/BSc in Electrical Engineering/ Electronic Engineering/ Mechatronic Engineering.

  • Good communication skills, written and Oral enabling successful interaction with team leaders, fellow engineers and management

  • A pro-active approach to problem identification and resolution.

  • Good organizational skills.

  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented and passion for learning with a practical mindset.

  • Able to critically look at performance and engineering practices to define and improve departmental procedures.

  • Strong abilities in technical drawings

  • Experience in software packages including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook

  • Right to work in the UK

Travel: 

  • Both domestic and international travel may be required in this role on an occasional basis.
