Machinist 2

REPORTS TO:

Reports directly to the Production Supervisor in the Tooling and Parts Machining Department. 

Toray Advanced Composites USA, Inc.

Toray Advanced Composites is a leading supplier of thermoplastic and thermoset composite materials for the aerospace and industrial advanced composite industry.  The thermoset composites from Toray are used on satellites, radomes, unmanned aircraft, general aviation and military aircraft.  Toray also provides thermoset composites in high end industrial and recreational applications ranging from oil and gas to prosthetics to sporting equipment. 

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS:

A Machinist 2 must be capable of setting up and machining parts using fixtures and/or CNC machining centers by following the written directions provided as part of the job.  At times, may work with a Molding Helper to increase the throughput on the equipment.   Responsible to direct the activities of the Molding Helper and ensure that they comply with the job requirements.  They are also responsible for the completeness and accuracy of all work being done at their work cell.  A Machinist 2 will also be able to run any job that has been setup previously and can run most equipment in the tool manufacturing and maintenance area when setup by a more senior machinist.

MAJOR DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

Each operator is evaluated in many proficiency areas on the skills matrix every six months.  They are rated in each area as follows:

•    1 – Learning the basics on that skill and can assist others.

•    2 – Has been trained and is fully proficient to run simple jobs unassisted. 

•    3 – Ability to run most jobs and train others.

•    4 – Ability to run any job and train others.

•    5 – Can do process development type tasks on any new job in the area and can lead others.

To qualify as a Machinist 2, the employee must have a score within a certain range as defined by the skills matrix.  If the employee falls out of this range, they are moved to the corresponding position for the rating earned.  Performs other duties as assigned by the Lead/Supervisor or designee.

EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

•    High school diploma or equivalent

•    3 years plus of experience running CNC machines

•    Ability to setup and operate computer-controlled equipment.

•    Able to work and communicate as a member of a team.

•    Must be able to communicate clearly (written and verbal) in English.

•    Ability to convert weight and length units of measure such as inches to mm and pounds to grams.

•    Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions for machine operation.

•    Must have strong math skills and basic computer skills.

•    Must be able to use a caliper and micrometer for detailed part in-process measurements.
