Legislative Assistant
Job Description
Reporting to Michael Chong, the Legislative Assistant will work on Parliament Hill in Ottawa and assist with various duties, largely related to the foreign affairs critic portfolio (always subject to change), committee work and research. The successful candidate will work alongside an Executive Assistant in the Ottawa office, and two Constituency Assistants in the riding office in Fergus. This position will be responsible for policy research and analysis but will also have a significant focus on communications. This is a position where it is required to work in person in the Parliament Hill office.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Draft written documents, including: question period questions, speeches, private member’s bills/motions, statements, SO31;
- Gather research, including legislative reports, opposition research (for opposition day motions, caucus, and/or other MP offices), private member’s bills/motions, policy research, etc.
- Maintain working relationships with the offices of Members of Parliament, the Opposition Leader’s Office, as well as well as occasionally taking meetings with local and national stakeholders;
- Attend and take notes at the Caucus Advisory Committee (CAC) and occasional stakeholder roundtables;
- Review Hansard Blues;
- Prepare Readouts in both official languages to post on social media;
- Prepare Talking Points;
- Manage work related to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs MP Chong sits on. Committee work includes organizing pre-committee meetings with other MP offices, preparing committee materials, attending committee, drafting post-committee reports, liaising with the Chair and Clerk of the Committee, researching witnesses and potential studies, meeting with relevant stakeholders, drafting committee reports, drafting dissenting reports, etc.;
- Monitor and manage social media accounts (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Linktree, and Substack) and MP Chong’s website. This includes planning, posting and translating all content on MP Chong’s social media accounts and responding to stakeholders;
- Draft written documents: including correspondence (letters and emails) to constituents and ministers, riding newsletters/flyers, op-eds for newspapers, news releases, etc.;
- Be on-call and work after hours as required, sometimes in the evening or on weekends – typically when the House of Commons is sitting;
- Travel occasionally when required, once or twice a year, to the constituency of Wellington-Halton Hills North;
- Additional duties as required.
Education:
- An undergraduate degree with related work experience (experience in a public office is preferred).
Experiences and Skills:
- Superior writing and editing skills in English (accuracy and attention to detail are critical).
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment (managing multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines).
- Strong research skills (gathering research, analysis of documents, summary of findings, etc.).
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Background in Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word, and Publisher).
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as a member of a team.
- An interest in politics, public policy, and domestic and international affairs.
Assets:
- Background in managing social media accounts.
- Ability to speak French.
Salary and Benefits: The starting salary range for this position is $60,000 to $70,000. The starting salary will be commensurate to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The position offers an excellent benefit package, including paid vacation, health benefits and pension contributions.
Target Hire Date: August 31, 2026 (an earlier start date possible).
