Method of Appointment:  Appointed by Mayor 

Length of Appointment:  2 years

Residency:  Must be a resident of the District of Columbia

Compensation: None (all roles are voluntary)

The Commission shall advise the Mayor on programs, projects, activities, and forums to celebrate and commemorate April 16th as a public legal holiday in District of Columbia that recognizes the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act ("Act"), approved by Congress and signed by President Abraham Lincoln on April 16, 1862 to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia.

MEMBER BACKGROUND

Members of the Commission shall be District residents and appointed by the Mayor. The Commission shall be comprised of members of the general public as well as members with experience in business, labor and economic development, history, education, religion, culture and heritage. Appointees may not be employed at a District of Columbia agency, including independent agencies.
