Your Opportunity
Hourly Rate: $16.00
The Research Intern is responsible for collecting data and samples as outlined in protocols for research trials. This position also monitors and cares for animals on research trials.
Core Responsibilities
Works daily on research farm; including tagging, weighing and moving pigs of all sizes
Collects blood samples and oral fluids
Vaccinates animals
Implements and follows all protocols for each research trial; including recording all necessary data
Performs and masters all methods of data collection; including operating individual scales
Responsible for complying with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield Hog Production Division subscribes
Reports all environmental issues immediately to their supervisor
Reads and understands the company’s emergency notification process and will be responsible for reviewing that policy at their work site
Work weekends as scheduled
Follows all company animal care, IPS, and biosecurity policies

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in a 2-4 year degree program. Animal Science major preferred
Excellent organizational skills and independent problem solving
Experience using Microsoft Office
Ability to use electronic data capture (RFID technology)
Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
Must be able to tolerate and willing to learn and perform the following tasks: euthanasia, castration, vaccinations, piglet processing, ear tagging for identification, taking blood samples and other procedures normal to animal husbandry.

Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
Must be able to work with and around a wide range of antibiotics (i.e. penicillin).
Must be able to tolerate blood, animal dander, manure, dust, odors, and frequently noisy conditions.
