Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for the supervision and coordination of basic first aid, medication, and medication-related services for youth served at YFA shelters.

In addition to the duties and requirements listed below, YFA expects employees to be committed to incorporating principles of trauma-informed care in all areas of service delivery. Commitment to these principles is demonstrated through active participation in agency-required training, use of trauma-informed practices, and understanding that trauma-informed environments require cultural sensitivity and an emphasis on a safe and respectful environment for all.


WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Foster a safe and welcoming environment for youth, families, and colleagues, ensuring emotional and physical security without re-traumatization.
  • Follow a trauma-informed approach, demonstrating sensitivity to individuals’ needs and experiences.
  • Oversee daily first aid and medication management for all youth within scope of training.
  • Maintain compliance with YFA policies and State regulations.
  • Complete documentation on youth healthcare status upon admission.
  • Review Health Admission Screening forms and conduct nursing assessments.
  • Develop nursing care plans, including medical/dental appointments, medications, and community providers.
  • Complete and manage Medical Alerts for dietary and health concerns.
  • Provide episodic and emergency care on-site; refer to ER or EMS when necessary.
  • Responsible for medication distribution, secure storage, and overall accountability.
  • Administer medication during on-site hours.
  • Train and verify competency of non-licensed staff for self-administration assistance.
  • Verify incoming medications with pharmacy, provider, and guardians.
  • Manage the Pyxis system and maintain accurate inventory counts.
  • Monitor and audit daily Medication Distribution Logs (MDLs).
  • Reorder OTC medications and first aid supplies as needed.
  • Monitor for and document medication side effects, train staff as necessary.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis for medication errors.
  • Educate youth and guardians on medications and health conditions (fitness, nutrition, coping skills).
  • Chronic/acute conditions
  • Infection control and Universal Precautions
  • Wellness, exercise, and nutrition for adolescents
  • Review and evaluate medical incidents; recommend corrective actions.
  • Monitor data via Care Fusion Knowledge Portal for trends and concerns.
  • Assist shelter leadership in Quality Improvement efforts and adherence to healthcare standards.
  • Maintain and review all MDLs and youth health records.
  • Document all nursing interventions including education, first aid, and emergency care.
  • Participate in required YFA and external training to maintain RN certification.
  • Understand trauma impact and positive behavior support techniques.
  • Work collaboratively with shelter team and independently as needed.
  • Adhere to EEO principles, YFA core values, and mission.
  • Authorized to access and maintain confidentiality of protected health information (PHI).
  • Complete additional tasks or projects as assigned by Program Director.

WHAT YOU NEED / REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience: This position must be filled by a Registered Nurse (RN). RNs shall have an active and clear Florida license in accordance with chapter 464, Florida Statutes. Ability to practice self-care and seek support as needed to prevent burnout while providing trauma-informed care.  This position shall not be filled by a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).


Physical Requirements: Ability to bend, lift, and carry up to 30 pounds.
