Job Description

Position:        Maintenance (A)  School Bus Mechanic                                                
                        (For School buses, trucks, cars and related equipment) - B or C based on experience and skills
Location:        Lane Transportation Center                              
Reports To:    Supervisor of Transportation and Shop Foreman
 
Basic Function:  Responsible for performing skilled repair and maintenance of school buses, trucks, cars and related work as required

Qualifications:

  • Formal trade school or equivalent acceptable to the district
  • Four years' experience in an automotive mechanic trade, two years of which shall have been at the skilled level working on medium or heavy-duty trucks and school buses. Including diesel repairs, overhaul, and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform tasks in their specific craft
  • Knowledge of diesel engines, air brake systems and other related systems that would need repair.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instruction and to complete service records and reports.
  • Must have or obtain a CDL "Class B" Commercial Driver's License* and a School Bus Drivers License with "P*","S" and air brake endorsements* to be successfully completed within the probationary period of employment
  • May be required to work night shift, extended hours or holidays as transportation operations require.
  • Must supply complete set of personal hand tools up to one (1) inch sockets and wrenches.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds with assistance

Duties:

  • Assists other maintenance personnel when requested
  • Ensure safety of buses worked on for safe transportation of students, drivers, and general public
  • Perform preventive maintenance on buses and equipment, trucks, plows, skid steer, and tractors
  • Responds to road service calls for us repairs, accidents and towing recovery, operating safely assessing situations quickly, securing us and assisting driver and supervisor in transfer of students in all weather conditions, day or night, as instructed
  • Answer spontaneous shop calls
  • Open and close transportation department morning and night
  • Salt plow yards with all equipment as needed for snow removal and ice conditions
  • Prepare all buses for biannual state inspection
  • Repair/replace radio/pa systems
  • Perform heavy repairs of engine transmissions, suspension, axle, drive shafts and brake systems
  • Cooperate fully with other Transportation Department employees and other district personnel
  • Responsible for major maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs and preventive maintenance related to their demonstrated craft skill
  • Participate in maintenance operations other than their demonstrated skill when needed
  • Handles maintenance requests as assigned by the Supervisor or designee and paperwork involved in completion of assignment.
  • Operates other equipment as required including a school bus
  • Demonstrate leadership ability as well as capability to instruct others in their demonstrated craft skill
  • Drive school buses on routes transporting students as required to ensure efficient transportation operations when needed
  • Fill def tanks
  • Complete written or electronic maintenance records for all equipment
  • May be required to work during emergency operations
  • Sweep/clear debris from shop floors
  • Minor repairs to fenders or other body parts
  • Other duties as assigned
