GENERAL PURPOSE
The Hand Sander is responsible for sanding and finishing wood or composite components using hand-held sanding equipment (including jitterbug sanders) to meet quality and production standards. This role ensures surfaces are smooth, properly prepared, and ready for finishing while maintaining safety and efficiency in a manufacturing environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Operate hand sanding tools (including jitterbug/orbital sanders) to smooth surfaces and remove imperfections from parts.
Inspect materials before and after sanding to ensure quality standards are met.
Follow standard work instructions and production schedules to meet daily output goals.
Maintain consistent sanding techniques to achieve uniform surface finishes.
Identify defects such as scratches, dents, or uneven surfaces and take corrective action.
Change sandpaper and maintain sanding tools to ensure optimal performance.
Keep work area clean and organized in accordance with safety and lean manufacturing practices.
Work collaboratively with team members and communicate issues impacting quality or production.
Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Cross-train in related production tasks as needed to support team operations.
Perform other duties as assigned to support business needs.

Education/Experience
One of the following is required: (1) High school diploma or its equivalent (GED for example), (2) work experience which demonstrates performance competency
Skills and Abilities
Ability to use hand tools, specifically jitterbug/orbital sanders.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Basic math skills (counting, measuring, simple calculations).
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced production setting.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to stand and perform repetitive tasks for the duration of the shift.
Frequent use of hands for sanding, gripping, and handling materials.
Ability to lift:
Up to 10 lbs regularly
Up to 25 lbs frequently
Up to 40 lbs occasionally
Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
Specific vision abilities include close vision and attention to fine detail.
