The Opportunity:

The Law Clerk position is a great opportunity for recent law school graduates seeking to gain practical, hands-on experience applying your knowledge to assist with high profile cases being investigated and litigated by the Department of Justice. This opportunity will also enhance your knowledge and understanding of the litigation life cycle as you assist with investigations from discovery through trial and appeal.

As a Law Clerk, you will work as a part of a high-performing team where you will be able to hone your analytical and research skills by engaging in intensive document reviews to identify relevant documents and to conduct legal and factual research to build case.  

In addition:
•You will gain invaluable experience utilizing electronic discovery tools and work in databases such as Relativity, conducting searches and identifying factually relevant and privileged data to support assigned investigations.
•Perform complex legal research for the trial staff.  
•Assists in preparing draft legal documents, such as motions, briefs, memoranda of law, etc.
•Review documents for relevance and privilege; and assisting attorneys with all phases of litigation.

Responsibilities:


The LAW Clerk I will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Managing highly complex FOIA requests including those related to subpoenas and appeals, as well as reviews and responds to highly sensitive FOIA and Privacy Act requests.
  • Provides support to the Chief FOIA Officer for agency compliance with the FOIA, assisting on preparing records for posting to the agency’s Frequently Requested Records webpage.
  • Consults with the Department of Justice, Office of Management and Budget, and other federal agencies on matters related to the case teams areas of responsibility.
  • Processes FOIA requests and drafts communications to ensure the fullest and speediest possible disclosure of records to the public, consistent with the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA), Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Privacy Act, and related laws, regulations, and guidance. Responsible for retrieving, analyzing sufficiency for responsiveness to requests, and redacting records using FOIA processing software. Works with program offices to ensure timely responsiveness to requests for documents, and with requesters to clarify requests. Reviews and analyzes records for missing portions or documents and extends searches for any missing elements.
  • Examines and analyzes responsive records for any sensitive and potentially sensitive information that should be redacted. For processing Office of Compliance, and Office of Risk Reduction records, restructures files into a coherent package that is understandable and intuitive. Determines which materials must be processed, then prepares correspondence (for attorney review and signature) to product manufacturers, private labelers or importers to provide them with an opportunity to comment under Section 6 of the CPSA. Incorporates manufacturer comments and prepares reverse notices and proposed disclosure letters for attorney review and signature. Prepares final disclosure correspondence for attorney review and signature. Consults with reviewing attorney on questions as they arise.
  • Ability to learn and maintain thorough knowledge of the FOIA, Privacy Act, the CPSA, and related laws, regulations, and guidance. Possesses clear oral and written communication skills. Possesses knowledge of interpersonal, written, and oral communication principles, techniques, and methods. Ability to analyze and interpret FOIA requests. Ability to analyze and evaluate confidentiality claims and to apply appropriate statutes when making determinations to honor or dishonor those confidentiality claims. Ability to ensure sensitive and confidential records are properly withheld by law. Ability to use various software applications to process large volumes of records.  


Qualifications:

Required: 

  • Law degree, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study, or an equivalent level of legal training or experience or an equivalent level of education may be substituted.
  • Only the Contracting Officer can approve a waiver related to the education requirements. 
  • Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.
  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
  • Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, and imaging.
  • Role also requires hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
  • DOJ MBI must be obtainable (US Citizenship required).

Pay Range:

This posting is for a position covered by the Service Contract Labor Standards (SCA). The pay and benefits provided for this position will meet or exceed the minimum required amounts detailed in the wage determination issued by the Department of Labor and made applicable to this position, as incorporated into CACI’s government contract for the work location.​
 

Minimum Required Hourly Wage:

$38.77
