JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Penn State Berks Continuing Education & Outreach seeks applications for a part-time adjunct instructor to teach Blueprint Reading (AE 6300) as part of the non-credit Construction Management Certificate.
The Construction Management Certificate is a four-course program designed to strengthen practical knowledge for individuals already working in construction as well as those seeking to enter the field. Blueprint Reading is a foundational course in the certificate and introduces students to the skills and tools needed to efficiently read a full set of construction drawings. Course topics include blueprint standards, dimensions, views, layout, sketching, and evaluation of construction drawing sets, including civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical drawings.
Job Duties
The adjunct instructor will be expected to:
- Teach assigned Blueprint Reading course sections in the delivery format established by Penn State Berks Continuing Education & Outreach.
- Prepare and deliver instruction aligned with approved course outcomes and adult learner needs.
- Develop and maintain course materials, lesson plans, demonstrations, and applied learning activities.
- Provide students with practical instruction in interpreting construction documents and industry drawing conventions.
- Evaluate student learning through assignments, exercises, and/or project-based work, and provide timely feedback.
- Maintain accurate attendance and course records and submit required documentation by established deadlines.
- Communicate regularly with Continuing Education staff regarding course scheduling, materials, and student needs.
- Support a professional, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
Requirements and Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Candidates should have:
- A bachelor’s degree in construction management, architectural engineering, civil engineering, engineering technology, architecture, or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education and substantial relevant industry experience.
- Demonstrated professional experience working with construction drawings, specifications, and related documentation.
- Expertise in blueprint reading across multiple drawing disciplines, including architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil plans.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to teach applied concepts to adult learners.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates with:
- Prior college-level, continuing education, workforce development, or corporate training experience.
- Experience in commercial, institutional, or multi-discipline construction project environments.
- Familiarity with current construction documentation standards and industry best practices.
- A master’s degree in a related field.
