Maintenance / Custodian (Union Hall)
PRIMARY FUNCTION/PURPOSE:
Maintain a clean and healthy environment for clients, staff, and volunteers by performing a variety of hands-on cleaning and maintenance tasks. This individual is responsible for attending to our Union Hall location in Queens, NY.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent is required
- At least one year of experience providing custodial services in a business or social service environment is required
- Familiarity with equipment and processes associated with custodial work is required
- Ability to work overtime when necessary is required
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds is required
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Clean offices, bathrooms, kitchens, and common areas daily
- Complete repairs throughout the facility when necessary; properly place furniture in clients rooms, offices, and common areas
- Perform minor plumbing repairs (faucets, toilets, drains) and general plumbing maintenance
- Perform minor electrical fixes (wiring, fixtures, light bulbs, switches) and general electrical maintenance
- Perform minor carpentry repairs (adjust hardware, touch-up walls/paint, replace ceiling tiles) and general carpentry maintenance
- Evaluate issues as they arise and communicate with the operations manager when outsourcing of maintenance tasks is required
- Unload and store deliveries in the storage area; move furniture and equipment as needed
- Remove garbage daily from kitchens, bathrooms, office, and common areas; place garbage at the curb for pick up by the sanitation department; clean and mop floors regularly; prepare floors for stripping and waxing as required
- Clear sidewalks and entrances of snow and spread salt/ice melt to ensure clear and safe access to the facility
- Prepare units for occupancy
- Clean, repair, and store paint brushes, rollers, ladders, and other equipment; prepare and apply paints and finish to interior and exterior surfaces when required
- Report routine observations of residential and public areas to supervisory staff, including conditions which might affect the safety and security of clients or staff
- Perform other duties and special projects as required, including serving on-call for a one-week period each quarter
- Facilitate effective communication with other staff
- Participate in training and staff-development activities to acquire and maintain the interpersonal and operational skills necessary for successful job performance
Other Requirements (including Physical Demands):
- May be required to work long hours and a varied schedule to meet job demands and deadlines
- Periodically may bend, lift, and carry objects weighing up to seventy-five pounds
