Job Description Summary:

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center invites applications for a Cancer-Focused Physician Scientist or Academic Pathologist at the Associate Professor or Professor level. Appointments are available on either the tenure track or clinical scholar track, commensurate with experience and academic accomplishments.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is undergoing transformative growth, with a fully implemented subspecialty practice
model supporting a high-volume and diverse case mix. The department performs over 7 million laboratory tests annually and accessions over 65,000 surgical pathology cases, providing exceptional opportunities for clinicopathologic correlation and translational research.

The University of Kansas Cancer Center is the region’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center—offers a rich, collaborative research ecosystem, including:
• A certified CAR-T cell therapy program
• A Precision Medicine Center (COBRE-supported)
• Strong infrastructure for basic, translational, clinical, and population-based cancer research These resources create a highly supportive environment for impactful discovery and rapid clinical translation.

Tenure track appointments are full-time with an initial probationary period of seven years. Criteria for promotion includes significant achievements in teaching, research/scholarship, and service. The award of tenure is based on potential for sustained contributions, performing beyond expected duties, and demonstrating leadership and innovation in activities that enhance the reputation of the University.

The Clinical Scholar Track is for full-time faculty members who are heavily involved in clinical service, education, and related scholarship.
This track has two career paths: Clinician-Educator concentrating on teaching and Clinician-Investigator for concentrating on research/scholarship. Significant contributions in professional and academic service are required for both paths.

Job Description:

Job Duties

  • Lead an independent, externally funded research program in cancer-focused investigation.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across the department, The University of Kansas Cancer Center, and the broader academic community.

  • Participate 25% to 30% on clinical service within a pathology subspecialty.

  • Contribute to the academic mission through graduate, medical student, and residency education.

Required Qualifications
Education: M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree.

This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position.  The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.
 

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Board certification or eligibility in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology.

  • Eligibility for unrestricted medical licensure in Kansas

Work Experience:​ Experience in research, with a focus on cancer biology or related discipline.​

Preferred Qualifications

  • Robust publication record and an independently funded research program (or strong potential for sustained external funding).

  • Strong track record in cancer biology, translational oncology, or precision diagnostics, whose work advances the understanding of tumor biology and enables innovative, approaches to cancer diagnosis, treatment and patient outcomes
