Acute Care Emergency Surgery Advanced Practice Provider, Day position
Job Description
Capital Region Health is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Acute Care Emergency Surgery (ACES) Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join our growing surgical services team in Largo, Maryland.
This full-time day position offers an exciting opportunity to practice in a dynamic environment providing care for trauma, acute care surgery, and critically ill surgical patients. As part of our multidisciplinary team, you will work alongside surgeons, intensivists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care.
In addition to supporting the ACES service, providers may assist with urology, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, and thoracic surgery services as needed. Comprehensive training will be provided to ensure competency across all aspects of the ACES team, with opportunities for cross-training and coverage across additional APP service lines.

Key Responsibilities:
In collaboration with the physician care team, the Advanced Practice Provider will:
- Provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services to critically ill and surgical patients
- Obtain comprehensive patient histories and perform physical examinations
- Conduct daily rounds and coordinate multidisciplinary patient care
- Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic testing and imaging studies
- Formulate diagnoses and implement treatment plans
- Manage trauma and acute surgical patients throughout hospitalization
- Communicate effectively with attending physicians, consulting services, nursing staff, patients, and families
- Perform advanced procedures within approved privileges, including:
- Central venous catheter placement
- Chest tube insertion
- Additional trauma and surgical procedures as credentialed
- Provide patient and family education regarding treatment plans and recovery expectations
- First assist in the operating room
- Identify and communicate patient safety concerns and process improvement opportunities
- Support quality improvement initiatives and organizational patient safety goals

Minimum Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor's degree and graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program with current NCCPA certification and Maryland licensure
OR
- Current certification and licensure to practice as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in Maryland
Additionally:
- Credentialing through the University of Maryland Capital Region Health Medical Staff Office
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications
- ATLS certification required (may be obtained after hire)
- Participation in approved continuing medical education programs
Preferred:
- Minimum of one year of surgical, trauma, emergency medicine, critical care, or acute care experience
Continuing Education Requirements:
- Complete a minimum of 50 Category I CME hours every two years
- Complete 32 hours of trauma-related CME
- Maintain competency in trauma, acute care surgery, and related surgical subspecialties
- Adhere to Maryland Board of Physicians or Maryland Board of Nursing standards and approved procedural protocols
