As part of SJ Group, SMEC draws on a global network of 16,000+ specialists across engineering, planning, design, project management and advisory, combining local insight with international capability to deliver integrated infrastructure solutions.

That capability is backed by strong international recognition, including ENR rankings of #24 among the Top 225 International Design Firms and #5 in Australia/Oceania, giving our teams access to leading clients, major projects and specialist expertise worldwide.

SMEC is seeing strong transport growth across Australia and New Zealand, with expanding opportunities in resilient networks, sustainable mobility and major city-shaping projects.

At SMEC, you’ll join a collaborative, inclusive culture that supports technical excellence, professional growth and leadership, with opportunities to work on nationally significant projects, partner with global specialists and help shape the future of our Queensland and New Zealand business.

The Role

We’re seeking a motivated Transport Engineer to join our growing team, supporting the delivery of transport planning, traffic engineering, and civil design projects across New Zealand and the wider region.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career professional who enjoys variety, is keen to build broad transport capability, and wants to contribute across both technical delivery and the wider consulting environment.

You’ll work alongside experienced leaders and multidisciplinary teams on a diverse range of projects, gaining exposure to planning, design, proposals, and client-focused delivery while continuing to develop your technical and professional skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to transport planning, traffic engineering, and civil design outputs for public sector and infrastructure projects
  • Support the preparation of technical documentation, analysis, drawings, and project deliverables to a high standard
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop practical, coordinated, and high-quality solutions
  • Assist with proposals, commercial inputs, and broader consulting activities as part of your professional development
  • Apply relevant technical standards, client requirements, and quality expectations across project work
  • Build productive relationships with colleagues and contribute positively to team delivery and continuous improvement
  • Manage priorities effectively and deliver accurate work within agreed timeframes

About You

You’re a curious and adaptable transport professional with a strong technical foundation and a willingness to keep learning. You enjoy working across a range of project types, take initiative, and are motivated to grow into a well-rounded consultant who can contribute both technically and commercially.

You will bring:

  • 2–7 years’ experience in transport planning, traffic engineering, civil design, or a related infrastructure environment
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in engineering or a related discipline
  • Experience working on civic or public sector transport projects
  • A flexible, proactive mindset and willingness to adapt to new challenges and opportunities
  • An interest in developing a broader understanding of transport planning, traffic engineering, and civil design
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
  • A commitment to continuous improvement, professional growth, and delivering quality outcomes
  • Progress toward Chartered status, or an interest in working toward it, will be viewed favourably

We understand that no candidate will meet every single requirement. If this role interests you and you feel you can bring value to the team, we encourage you to apply—we’d love to hear from you.
