Description of Work

This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor I in the Cumberland County Maintenance Unit. Work is related to maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads. In this position you will supervise a crew of subordinates in the maintenance and construction of highways as well as other duties assigned. This position will supervise roadway maintenance crews working in and around heavy traffic, heavy equipment and with power tools. The selected candidate must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently, as needed. Responsibilities include supervision of roadway maintenance crew involved in drainage maintenance, patching, shoulder repair, paved and unpaved roadway maintenance, vegetation management, snow and ice removal and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. The selected candidate must be able to install and maintain work zone control plans, complete daily work reports, and conduct daily tailgate meetings. This position requires you to work nights and weekends as needed for emergencies and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes. Work includes reading and interpreting plans, determining personnel, equipment and material needed to complete assigned maintenance tasks. Employees are responsible for making appropriate adjustments of plans to meet field conditions, planning, monitoring and ensuring safety standards are adhered to, daily documentation of personnel, material and equipment usage, responding to public inquiries, attending training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state and federal regulations and maintaining certifications in all required areas.

Additional Expectations:
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required. Release forms ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06 must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol. Safety Toe Shoes are required within 30 days of employment. Employee must be able to operate CDL equipment with both automatic and manual transmissions.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC14 - $52,592 - $92,036

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in road maintenance and repair, as well as, maintenance equipment operation.

  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used.

  • Experience supervising subordinates and directing the daily activities of a work crew.

  • Experience in planning and organizing work.

  • Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and (6) six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
