Job Description
Covenant Woods, an upscale senior living community in Mechanicsville, VA, is seeking a Part-Time Horticulture Technician to support our innovative Farm-to-Table Program. This role is ideal for someone passionate about sustainable gardening, plant care, and working in a community-oriented environment.
The technician will assist with the hands-on management of our 20,000 sq. ft. institutional garden—including growing fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants—while supporting wellness initiatives for our residents.
Key Responsibilities
- Land preparation: Seedbed prep, installing weed barriers and fencing.
- Crop care: Sowing, transplanting, weeding, and pest/disease control.
- Irrigation: Installing and managing irrigation systems.
- Harvesting & Storage: Harvesting produce, weighing yields, and storing products appropriately.
- Record keeping: Maintaining logs, inventory of tools/equipment, and collecting basic field data.
- Resident & Volunteer Engagement: Assisting with community garden activities and working alongside volunteers
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma required; college coursework in horticulture, agriculture, or related field preferred.
- Experience: Hands-on experience with crop management, soil preparation, irrigation, pest control, and light equipment operation.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to guide and work collaboratively with volunteers, students, and staff.
- Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with organic or sustainable farming practices (certification not required).
- Other Requirements: Valid driver’s license and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Schedule & Compensation
- Part-time position: 16–24 hours per week
- Pay: Competitive hourly rate, based on experience
