Job Description

General Purpose of Job
Support clients engaged in the dependency system. Work in conjuncture with the child welfare case management staff to support parental progress in treatment interventions, education, and other supportive services; and to assist in maintaining child safety and well-being.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Support families in completing all child welfare–related tasks outlined in case plans and service agreements.
- Serve as a resource to families by encouraging the use of both formal and informal community supports.
- Monitor safety plans and document observations to ensure family compliance, engagement, and progress.
- Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of all client interactions, particularly those involving children and family members.
- Participate in case staffings and court hearings as needed, providing relevant updates and professional input.
- Provide case manages with administrative support to ensure the overall compliance and safety of the cases they are assigned to
- Maintain reliable transportation and the ability to drive in order to perform required field-based activities.
- Assist with shelter placement and transportation needs for children and/or clients as needed.
- Ensure timely and accurate entry of data into automated systems, including FSFN.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of departmental and agency goals, as appropriate to the position.
Working HOurs
Children’s Network of Hillsborough’s standard business hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This position is an in-office based position with fieldwork requirements, that averages 40 hours per week. Work hours may vary outside of these standard hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed to meet operational demands. All hours worked will be compensated in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and agency policies, including applicable overtime and other compensation requirements
Travel
Travel within and outside of Hillsborough County is required. The employee must be able to drive and have reliable transportation to perform the essential functions of the position.
Training
All employees are required to complete fifteen (15) hours of training annually, which may be completed online or in a classroom setting. Employees who hold a credential or license relevant to their position must ensure that all training and continuing education requirements are met to maintain their credential or licensure.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required, A.A. degree preferred
- Previous child welfare or family support related experience is preferred;
Skills and Abilities
Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with children, families, and professionals from diverse backgrounds. The ability to build trust and maintain professional boundaries is essential in supporting families during challenging and emotionally charged situations. Strong observational skills and attention to detail are critical when monitoring safety plans and documenting client interactions. The role requires organizational and time management abilities to handle multiple responsibilities, meet deadlines, and maintain accurate records. Familiarity with child welfare systems, including documentation in FSFN or similar platforms, is important for ensuring compliance and accountability. A Family Safety Worker must also demonstrate sound judgment, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Adaptability, teamwork, and a commitment to family-centered, trauma-informed practice are key to success in this position.

Other Requirements
Language Skills
Must have strong language skills to communicate clearly and professionally with children, families, colleagues, and community partners. Effective verbal communication is essential for explaining safety plans, engaging families in services, and participating in court hearings or team meetings. Equally important are written communication skills, as the role requires detailed and accurate documentation of observations, client interactions, and case activities in systems such as FSFN. The ability to adjust communication style based on the audience, demonstrate cultural sensitivity, and convey empathy while maintaining professionalism is crucial.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Must possess basic math abilities to accurately complete mileage logs, calculate timeframes for service delivery, and track compliance with case deadlines. These skills are also useful when reviewing financial assistance requests or resource allocations for families. Attention to detail and accuracy in handling numerical data supports timely documentation and contributes to overall case management efficiency. Familiarity with basic functions in spreadsheets or data systems can also aid in organizing and reporting relevant case information.
REASONING ABILITY
Must demonstrate strong reasoning and problem-solving abilities to assess family dynamics, identify potential safety concerns, and respond appropriately to evolving situations in the field. The ability to think critically and apply sound judgment is essential when monitoring safety plans, recognizing signs of risk, and making recommendations to case managers or supervisors. Workers must be able to analyze information from various sources—such as client interactions, environmental factors, and service provider input—to draw logical conclusions and support decision-making. Flexibility and adaptability are also important, as the role often requires responding to unexpected challenges while maintaining a focus on child safety and family progress. Clear reasoning skills support accurate documentation, effective communication, and timely intervention in high-stakes situations.
Physical Demands
This role requires the ability to perform field and community-based work, including traveling to various locations, conducting home visits, and attending meetings or events. The position may involve prolonged periods of standing, walking, and driving, as well as occasional lifting of materials up to 25 pounds. Flexibility and stamina are essential to effectively engage with families in diverse settings and respond to needs as they arise. WORK ENVIRONMENT
This is an in-office position with both administrative and field work responsibilities. The noise level in the office is typically
moderate. The role involves travel between agency locations and to community settings for field work, as well as extended
periods of computer use and frequent communication across multiple departments. Field work may include but is not limited
to home visits, transportation assistance, and collaboration with external partners. Reasonable accommodations may be
