Fire Protection Engineer

Job Description

What We Are Looking For

Provide fire protection engineering technical support to facility operations and project management teams throughout the organization. The engineer will work on a variety of projects involving the fire protection of ignitable liquid and gas assets, such as bulk storage tanks and vessels, truck and rail transfer racks, processing facilities, and LNG.


What You Will Do

  • Support expansion and sustaining projects by analyzing project details, conducting basic analysis of existing fire protection, establishing appropriate fire protection scopes of work based on project hazards and needs, reviewing and amending third-party design plans, and serving as the overall fire protection SME
  • Assist with evaluating fire protection capabilities at existing facilities and proposing methods for fire risk reduction
  • Assist facility operations with technical inquiries, such as code compliance, fire protection system troubleshooting, and interactions with local authorities
  • Participate in the development and revision of fire protection policies and procedures

What You Need

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or Fire Protection Engineering Technology. Other engineering or engineering technology degrees with appropriate work experience and certifications may be considered.

Experience / specific knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the design and installation of water-based fire protection systems and fire alarm systems
  • Ability to review fire protection design drawings for code compliance and design optimization
  • Performance of hydraulic calculations, hydraulic modeling, and water supply analysis
  • Ability to analyze fire hazards and develop the appropriate fire protection strategies for those hazards
  • Thorough understanding of NFPA codes and standards
  • Proficient in computer software applications including Microsoft Office

Certifications, licenses, registrations:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers.

Competencies, skills, and abilities:

  • Must be able to work in a team environment, take direction from supervisor(s), adhere to work schedules, focus on details and follow work rules
  • Self-sufficient in completing timesheets, expense reports, and other Company paperwork
  • Must have well developed organizational skills, be proficient in oral and written communications and be able to work with minimal supervision

Physical demands:

  • Ability to occasionally work outdoors, climb stairs, and lift equipment weighing 30 pounds

Working conditions:

  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% of the time is required; motor vehicle and air travel anticipated to support projects and field investigations on site
  • Ability to travel to field sites on short notice to respond to facility incidents
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (Monday-Wednesday in office, Thursday & Friday at home when travel is not required)
  • The successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and a complete background check, after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed.

Preferred education, experience, certifications, competencies, skills, and abilities:

Above the minimum requirements; not required but advantageous in the position.

  • Industrial fire protection experience (ignitable liquids and gases)
  • Familiarity with the design and installation of special hazards systems, such as foam systems, water spray systems, dry chemical systems, etc.
  • Professional Engineer and CFPS certifications are preferred, but not required
